Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School held its Sport Awards Ceremony recently with numerous learners being acknowledged for their outstanding achievements not only in the sporting codes offered at the school but also those not offered by the school.
The Junior All-round Sport Award went to Lukhanyo Nkonzo. She was recognized for her participation in Volleyball, has been a loyal member of the U14A Netball (Captain), Basketball, Soccer, Hockey, Junior A Indoor Teams. She also represented KZN Inland U14A hockey.
The Phumzile Gumede Award for a committed and unassuming sportswoman went to Emily Murray. Emily won this award for representing the 1st Hockey, Tennis & Water polo teams, Swimming B-squad and served sport as a Games secretary.
Maria Diedrick won the Gia Cousins Trophy for achievement, sportsmanship and service. She played for the 3rd Hockey, Swimming A-squad, 1st Soccer and Water polo teams and represented the South African under 17 team in the European Union Cup in the Czech Republic.
Nolwazi Zondi was the recipient of the Taryn de Winnaar Trophy for perseverance and commitment. She was recognized for taking her role as Games Secretary very seriously. She was a committed player in the 3rd Tennis, 2nd Netball, 1st Hockey and Indoor Hockey Teams. In spite of a broken finger, she represented KwaZulu-Natal in the National U18 Hockey Tournament, and has been included to the South African U17 Squad as well as been selected to the South African U18B Team.
The top award, the Val Fowler Trophy for Outstanding Senior Sportswomen went to Nonkanyiso Nyati. Nonkanyiso played for the schools 2nd Netball team, 1st teams in Basketball, Tennis, Hockey, Indoor Hockey . She represented the District at Tennis during 2016 and this year U18A KZN Inland Hockey team at the National Tournament.
