Olympic paddler Cyprian Ngidi – Treverton College slalom paddling

Olympic paddler Cyprian Ngidi. Treverton College Hosts Olympic Paddler Cyprian Ngidi for Slalom Course.

Treverton College, Mooi River, KwaZulu-Natal, had the privilege of welcoming former South African Olympic paddler Cyprian Ngidi this past weekend for an intensive slalom paddling course, held from Friday afternoon through to Sunday.

The programme placed particular emphasis on the four athletes selected to represent South Africa at the upcoming international competition in Poland this July. They are Jayden Davis and David Dent (Treverton), Hannah Trower (The Wykeham Collegiate), and James Gotte (Maritzburg College). Alongside them, a group of promising young paddlers eager to grow in the sport also took part. This reflects Treverton’s commitment to nurturing the future of slalom paddling.

On Friday afternoon, around 12 paddlers gathered at the Treverton College dam for flatwater training. Flatwater conditions are ideal for refining the technical skills required in slalom, one of the most demanding disciplines in paddling.

Training then shifted to the Bushman’s River at Black Rock on Saturday and Sunday. Once a renowned slalom venue, Black Rock had not been used for over a decade due to safety concerns and the sport’s decline. This weekend, however, it proved to be an inspired choice, with strong flow from Wagendrift Dam providing excellent conditions at a time when many rivers are typically at their winter low.

The progress made by all paddlers over the weekend was remarkable and deeply encouraging. Treverton College extends heartfelt thanks to Cyprian Ngidi for generously sharing his expertise and to the parents whose support added to the success of the event.
