Old Boys Day It was an exciting day of sport at St Charles College, with it being Old Boys Day. St Charles’ 1st hockey team took on Clifton. They were always going to be a tough opposition with their well-structured team. It turned out to be an exciting encounter.
The atmosphere of the day got to the St Charles College players as they look a little overawed at the start of the match. They played tentative hockey. This allowed Clifton to get on top early on and apply pressure. This led to the opening goal of the game. The goal came from a rebound in a short corner that Clifton reacted to quickly and finished with a neat backstick into the top right corner.
Rèarden Dicken
This goal sparked the SCC boys to life, and they began to turn on the heat. However, Clifton still managed to find space through the midfield, where they looked dangerous. It was the Blue and Gold who scored next, early in the 2nd half. Good build-up play, down the right-hand touch line and then a quick transfer saw a Saints player unmarked at the top of the circle. The player fired off a shot that was then deflected into the goal by Rèarden Dicken to level the score at 1 – 1.
Shortly after the equalizer, the Saints players were caught napping. A free hit awarded to Clifton just inside their attacking 23m area was taken quickly. Good skills from the Clifton player saw him weave past the home defenders and slip it to the far post for an easy tap in. Clifton were back in the lead, 2 – 1.
The St Charles College players fought hard for the equaliser and managed to create some golden opportunities. The game slowly opened up as numbers started to pile forward, but the score remained 2 – 1. It was the dying moments of the game and St Charles College were pushing hard for their goal. Clifton turned over and launched a quick counterattack that led to a short corner. They capitalised on it to make the score 3 – 1, which was how the game ended.
Man of the match went to Rèarden Dicken who was outstanding in the mid-field for St Charles College. – Mr Matthew Coombes (Head Coach).
