New Executive Head – Curro’s St Dominics Newcastle

New Executive Head. St Dominics Newcastle, part of the Curro Holdings group (the JSE-listed independent education provider), has appointed Shirley McGhee as its new Executive Head. She has been teaching at the school for 30 years in 2025 and is well known in the Newcastle community.

“I am extremely excited and honoured to be entrusted with this position,” says McGhee. “I also have a love for the school that is deep, and I feel very privileged to lead St Dominics. Furthermore I have spent most of my teaching career here. I started off as a teacher and I have slowly worked my way up the ranks.  I believe in getting fully involved in the school and giving back to our school community.”

Education is a changing and exciting environment

She says she is looking forward to guiding new staff to become the best that they can be. Also to supporting the school’s wonderful existing staff. “Education is a changing and exciting environment; it is wonderful to make a difference in our learners’ lives. My vision centres on unity and seeing to the needs of the school and the families that have entrusted us with their children.”

While Newcastle is experiencing touch economic times due to the closure of ArcelorMittal South Africa’s (Amsa) operations, McGhee believes the school has an important role to play in supporting families through the challenging period.

“The school has been here for many years. We are more than a century old. It is also a beacon in the Newcastle community,” she says. “Our resources are amazing, and we love to share our resources with other schools. As a school we offer a value for education in the form of our teaching and academic support being a part of the fee. We have incredible resources and coaches, and we believe in building the whole child. We also have a wonderful team of teachers. I’m honoured to lead them forward – between us we have more than 300 years of cumulative teaching experience.”

“Mrs McGhee has played an enormous role over the past three decades at St Dominics. We look forward to seeing how she leads the school forward,” says Jopie Maasdam, Business Manager for St Dominics Newcastle. “She is a dedicated teacher with a heart for the local community and for KwaZulu-Natal and all it offers, and our learners, their families and our staff could not be in better hands.”
