Netball Captain. In our popular series on sport captains, Schools That Rock talks to Lee-Ann Usher. Lee-Ann is the 1st Netball Team Captain of Eunice High School for Girls in Bloemfontein. Today she scores the sixth goal in our series of Netball Captains from schools in South Africa and Namibia.
Lee-Ann, at what age did you start playing netball?
- I started playing netball at the age of seven.
Are you truly passionate about netball? Why?
- I find immense joy in every facet of netball! The rush of adrenaline coursing through my veins as I step onto the court is exhilarating. The strong bond between teammates fosters enduring friendships, forming a tight-knit sisterhood. Netball has been a profound teacher, instilling in me qualities of resilience, determination, and discipline. Each day, I strive to enhance my skills and reach my fullest potential as a player. I consistently dedicate myself to training, playing, watching, and discussing netball. It holds a special place in my heart, and my passion for this sport knows no bounds.
Do you participate in other sports as well?
- Unfortunately, balancing the demands of maintaining high academic standards and my commitment to netball leaves me with little time to engage in any additional sports.
What position are you currently playing? Have you played any other positions in the past?
- I am presently positioned as goal defence, although I have rotated through all positions from shooter to keeper during my netball journey. Goal defence is certainly one of my preferred roles, along with center.
Have you been captain of a netball team before? To what degree?
- Indeed, I’ve had the privilege of leading numerous teams throughout my netball journey. Starting from the U13 A team of Universitas Primêre Skool (Tjokkies) to the first team of Eunice. I have also had the honour of captaining several Free State Netball teams.
During which game did you stress the most? Why?
- I experienced the greatest pressure during the All Girls’ finals in 2023. Our team was on the brink of securing the trophy and making history, yet we felt the weight of how close and distant that goal simultaneously seemed. We were determined to make a lasting impression and serve as an inspiration for younger girls. The match ended in a tie, leading us into extra time to determine the winner. Even after the first half of extra time, the score remained tied. Fortunately, we managed to push through in the second half and were crowned as the champions of the All Girls’ National Festival.
Lee-Ann, do you have any goals you’d like to achieve in the current season?
- On a personal level, I aim to earn a spot on the Free State team. I also secure a position in the top 35 group, granting me the opportunity to compete in trials for the under-18 South African team. Collectively, I envision our team advancing to the Free State Championships and securing a position among the top three teams in the All Girls’ National Festival tournament.
Do you plan to continue with netball after your school career? If so, at what level?
- I am interested in playing for my university hostel team and would also welcome the chance to represent my university.
Which school, if any, do you consider your strongest opponent?
- Our most challenging opponent lies within ourselves, as stated in the school motto: “She conquers who conquers herself.” Therefore, we must direct our attention towards our individual development and unite as a team to progress collectively.
What are you doing, as Netball Captain, to keep your team motivated?
- I make an effort to acknowledge every player’s small achievements and milestones, recognizing their hard work and offering support and guidance. I also prioritize fostering unity, as I believe it ignites excellence, and together, we thrive. Leading by example is important to me, but fortunately, I’m not alone in motivating the team. I’m part of an exceptional team that includes vice-captain Tarien van der Linde, coordinator Mrs Rachelle Rautenbach, and Coach Ané Retief, all of whom play vital roles in keeping the team motivated.
Is there a coach or netball player you currently look up to as a role model and why?
- At present, I admire Coach Ané Retief greatly. She exemplifies what it means to be a Child of God, radiating His light that brightens the lives of both me and my teammates. Through her unwavering dedication, determination, and resilience in the face of adversity, she has attained remarkable success. Her capacity to conquer obstacles and realize her aspirations serves as a beacon of inspiration for others, urging them to pursue excellence relentlessly. Leading by example, she instills confidence and empowers individuals to unleash their fullest potential, nurturing a culture of trust, admiration, and loyalty among her followers.
What was your biggest netball nightmare/experience during a game? If any.
- Last year during the DSTV Schools Netball Challenge in an important match; our GA tried to save a ball and unfortunately stepped on a supporter’s foot and tore her ligaments. This caused a big commotion on and off the court.
What have you learned about teamwork since becoming Netball Captain?
- It’s important to consistently offer encouragement and positivity as it influences those around you. I’ve also come to understand the significance of effective communication within the team. Transparent and honest communication fosters unity, trust, and comprehension among team members, allowing everyone to collaborate more efficiently toward shared objectives. Leadership teaches adaptability and flexibility in teamwork approaches. Sports are dynamic and unpredictable, demanding quick thinking, problem-solving, and adjustment to evolving circumstances.
Describe your highlights that you experienced in netball as a player and / or as Netball Captain?
- Key moments in my netball journey have included winning the St Andrews Netball Festival as part of the team in 2022, achieving victory at the All Girls’ Netball Festival in 2023, and earning a place in the top 35 U16 South African Netball Squad in 2022. Additionally, I cherish the milestone of reaching my 100th cap in 2024. Playing alongside my sister in the same team in both 2023 and 2024 has been a special experience, as has forming enduring friendships and creating lasting memories during tours. Through these experiences, I have grown closer to my teammates, who have become like family to me and I am eagerly anticipating what the season holds for our team.
What was the best advice you’ve ever received from your coach?
- The most impactful advice I’ve been given is that self-confidence is a decision I must consciously make. Only I can make that decision. Additionally, if I approach something with half-hearted effort, it’s as good as not doing it at all. Therefore, I always strive to give my best in everything I do.
Describe the most enjoyable game you’ve ever played.
- The 2023 league match against Sentraal was one of the best games I have ever played. It was highly anticipated by our team, as we were determined to win this respected opponent. As we took to the court, there was an electrifying atmosphere, with adrenaline coursing through our veins. Despite facing a tough opponent who led by four goals at halftime, we came together as a team and fought tirelessly. Ultimately, we managed to secure the victory on their home turf. Seeing that all the hard work has paid off and witnessing the joy in the eyes of our coaches, teammates, supporters, and especially our parents is a memory that I will cherish forever.
Which match has been your toughest match so far in your career?
- The championship match at the All Girls’ Festival in 2023. This match was physically and emotionally tiring as we had to go into extra time.
Lee-Ann, if you were to be a kitchen article, what would you be? Why?
- I would most likely be a chef’s knife. Just as a chef’s knife is essential in the kitchen for its ability to handle a wide range of tasks with precision and efficiency. I am good at slicing through complexities, offering insights, and serving up helpful information to meet the needs of those I interact with.
Which professional netball player would you like to have coffee with? Why?
- I’m eager to meet Courtney Bruce, Australian Netball player, over coffee. My choice stems from my admiration for her remarkable skills and accomplishments, as well as my keen interest in learning from her experiences. Connecting with one of the world’s top players is a genuine aspiration of mine. Courtney’s unwavering determination and ever-present smile during her games are truly inspiring.
