SACS Mountain Biking. The SACS mountain biking team travelled to Piet Retief High School in Mpumalanga to compete in the prestigious National Schools Finals. Joining them on her first official school tour was Ms Joja, who thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the boys and immersing herself in the sport.
The event featured a fast and technical course that challenged riders from across the country. On day one, representing SACS in the Youth Men 15 category were Grade 9 students Luke Schonegevel (22nd) and Jack Cumming (33rd). Fellow Grade 9 rider Thomas White delivered an outstanding performance in the Youth Men 16 category, finishing 8th overall. All three riders faced the added challenge of starting from the back of their respective fields due to missed seeding opportunities during the winter sports season. The course was made even more demanding by wet conditions following overnight rain.
Day two saw riders competing for their provinces. Luke was the sole SACS rider selected to represent the Western Cape, placing 20th in hot, windy conditions. Jack, still racing under the SACS banner, improved on his previous day’s result with a 28th-place finish. Thomas continued his strong form, securing 10th place despite another back-of-the-pack start.
The tour was a resounding success, thanks to the unwavering support of the parents, Ms Joja, and Mr Barnard. The team’s resilience and sportsmanship were a credit to SACS.
