Mathematics Olympiad. Mathematics Olympiad Brilliance from St Charles College.
The second round of the prestigious Old Mutual South African Mathematics Olympiad took place in May. Some of the brightest young minds in the country—and St Charles College has every reason to beam with pride.
Four standout students from Pietermaritzburg’s St Charles College have achieved exceptional results in this highly competitive round: James Isaac and Daniel Morkel (Grade 10), Bailey Peters (Grade 9), and Veer Bhagwan (Grade 8). These talented young mathematicians were among only six students from the entire Midlands region to qualify for this elite stage of the competition.
Their success places them in the top echelon of mathematical thinkers in the area—and their journey isn’t over yet. The final hurdle awaits on 31 July, when they’ll tackle an intense four-hour problem-solving examination—no calculators, just brainpower.
This remarkable accomplishment is a testament to their dedication, critical thinking, and passion for problem-solving.
“St Charles College salutes James, Daniel, Bailey, and Veer for rising to the challenge and representing St Charles College with such distinction. Best of luck for the final round—go make magic with mathematics!” – Mrs Charlotte Pillay, Deputy Head of Upper School
