Archery is a historical sport that is gaining popularity in modern day. Beginning as a hobby in the late 16th Century, today interest in the age-old game is soaring, thanks in large part to movies like “The Hunger Games” and “Lord of the Rings”. It’s also among the world’s safest sports which makes it ideal for youth.
It’s also why Curro Academy Riverside has been investing in its young archers, of which it has 80 in development. Both boys and girls enjoy the sport, with more and more girls joining in on the action.
Archery development
With its strong focus on archery development, Curro Academy Riverside has been chosen to host this year’s National Archery for schools program (NASP) African Tournament. Taking place between 11 and 12 December, the event brings together the top competing sports talent from across Africa. Sixty South African learners will battle it out against Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe for the bullseye to be crowned as the 2021 Champs. The international participants will join virtually.
While Curro’s archers won’t be participating, due to still being in training, they will be cheering on their countrymen and women at the event.
“Archery is a far more of a mental game than it is physically. It requires a significant amount of concentration and dedication. You must be completely aware of your surroundings. Having joined the NASP program in 2021 we are honoured to be the host. Our school is central to most areas in Gauteng and we have the space and facilities to host large events such as the NASP Africa Tournament,” comments Mari-Lene Fourie, Executive Head at Curro Academy Riverside.
