Head Girl Windhoek Gymnasium. In our series on schools’ head leaders for 2023, Schools That Rock talks to Mia Burger. Mia, Head Girl of Windhoek Gymnasium Private School for 2023, tells us more about herself and her leadership.
“My name is Mia Burger and I am the eldest of three children. My brothers have taught me that it is extremely important to remain flexible and teachable as a leader. I enjoy playing sports and have been playing netball from quite a young age. Playing netball taught me how essential and powerful unity is. Throughout the years I was blessed to represent my country on a national level and could continue my service as leader as captain of the team. I am a firm believer in leading by example as I follow the example of Christ. I strive to reflect His grace through everything I do. By having Christ as our leader, my team and I will continue to humbly serve our school and keep our lights shining brightly.
Personally, my goal for next year is to stay true to myself and continue working hard. Through hard work I want to excel academically and compete in sports to the best of my abilities.
Goal for Windhoek Gymnasium
My goal for Windhoek Gymnasium in 2023 is to build lasting relationships with the other schools in Windhoek in order to create collaborative opportunities for future leaders. Through these relationships and collaborations we can create ample memories and a matric year worth remembering.
As a learner in Windhoek Gymnasium, the challenges we face are limited; however, our greatest challenge is that of school spirit as learners find it difficult to stay motivated towards the end of the school year.
The quality education we, as learners receive at Windhoek Gymnasium, definitely stands out most. As a result of this education, several doors have opened for us at Windhoek Gymnasium. Learners are given the opportunity to develop to their full potential and become the person God intended them to be.
I often look up to previous leaders or someone that has been in my position before for advice and mentorship; however, my greatest inspiration has been the Lord as He will guide me through any challenges I may face as well as shape me into the leader He wants me to become.”
I would be a pot
You’re a kitchen article. What are you and why? “If I was a kitchen article I would be a pot. The significance of a pot is to keep all the ingredients together as you are cooking. Similarly to a pot I would keep my team together, working as one, to be successful leaders of the school.
My friends often describe me as someone who is determined and reliable. They see me as a trustworthy and caring person who will always support them in times of need.
Results motivate me to achieve my goals. I often set my goals based on desired results and by focussing on the outcome of whatever it is I’m working towards. I then continue to put in the work necessary for me to obtain those results.”
Why would you advise learners to also become part of your school? “Windhoek Gymnasium is a school that prioritises opportunities and learner development. I would advise learners to become part of our family as every learner is granted countless opportunities to grow to their full potential and make their dreams come true.
My favourite teacher? If I had to choose one teacher, it would be Ms Salomé Davin. She taught me to always stay true to myself no matter what and to always be kind and considerate towards others. Her positivity and continuous encouragement are some characteristics of hers which I admire.
Apart from travelling the world, a lifelong future goal of mine is also to one day be able to study medicine and continue to serve others by helping them live their best life. I want to be successful in terms of memories, sincere friends and true happiness.
