Head Girl 2024. Like in previous years, Schools That Rock interviewed Head Leaders of High Schools in South Africa. Today we learn more about Afika Mahlangeni Head Girl 2024 from Curro Century City in Cape Town.
Afika, tell us more about yourself and your leadership.
- I am outgoing and love reading. I am the chairperson of the Matric Leadership Council which focuses more on the discipline side. I am also of the chairperson of the Representative Counsel of learners. This council focuses more on the student body and their needs and also how to make their years at Curro Century City more enjoyable.
What are your personal goals for the this year?
- I always strive to be the best version of myself so my goal for the this year is to work towards a university of my choice. Since my high school career started, I have tried to participate in any and all activities that will showcase what I have to offer.
What are your goals for Curro Century City for your term of service?
- I plan to increase our school spirit and encourage participation in school events whether it is Sports, Culture or Academics. Curro Century City has a very diverse student body and I plan on increasing inclusivity of the the different cultures.
Afika, tell us about the biggest challenges you experienced as a learner of your school.
- Coming from a Caps curriculum to IEB was the hardest thing for me academically as it was difficult adjusting to the change. But the teachers I had were patient and accommodating. There were extra lessons and generally the teachers were always available to help. Which meant a lot to me.
What stands out most to you at Curro Centurion?
- The diverse cultures and religiong at Curro Century City and I think it’s the School best thing about my school . You get to meet different people and learn about different cultures and for me coming from a place with not a lot of diversity it is everything, it also prepares you for the real world as you will meet divers people.
Who do you look up to for inspiration or mentorship?
- My Grandfather, Mthunzi Mahlangeni. He never finished school. He had to leave school in Grade 9 to go work. Despite not having a Matric certificate he managed to open a shop and he sold anything and everything and earned the respect of the community. His success inspires me every day. I am in awe of what he achieved with the little he had.
You’re a kitchen article? What are you and why?
- I would be a blender because I’m loud.
Afika, how would your friends describe you?
- Loud, Resilient, determined, confident, always hyperactive, always there when needed and that I get things done and stand up for what I believe in.
What motivates you to achieve your goals?
- I believe we are put in the world to be the best version of ourselves and that motivates me to be do my best.
Why would you advise learners to also become part of Curro Century City?
- Because I think my school has a lot to offer from our academics to sports and culture excellence, including the atmosphere and vibe which promotes a healthy learning environment.
Who is your favourite teacher and why?
- Miss Mjila. She is no longer a part of the Curro Century City team, but she inspired me to reach for my goals and dreams. She also helped me find myself in my culture.
What are your future goals?
- My goal is to become a doctor or go into a career that aims at helping people and to be unapologetically be myself.
