Executive Portfolio Leader – Curro Westbrook

Executive Portfolio Leader. Like we did the past years, schoolsthatrock again chat to the Head Leaders of High Schools in South Africa this year. Today we talk to Jayden Fryer, Head Boy 2025 of Curro Westbrook, Gqeberha.

“As Head Leader 2025, I’m looking forward to watching our portfolio leaders grow together as we figure out the ropes. I want the students at our school to enjoy our presence and contribute to making our school a close knit community, a coyote family.

My personal goals for my leadership year is to leave a mark on the school, not only as a leader, but as a student. I want to get 7 distinctions, because I’ll never be in Grade 12 again. I want the school to become the birthplace of potential and amazing leaders.

Qualities of Curro Westbrook

The qualities of our school are the relationships with student and teacher. It feels a lot more personal than normal, in a good way. It’s also really easy to ask for help, whether it’s with schoolwork or perhaps a personal issue. I also like how we are slowly integrating technology more into our learning environment, because it has allowed me to see how much potential I have with studying further with technology.

Adjustments or changes I would like to see happen at our school? Planning is an issue. We often miscommunicate or don’t communicate at all. It makes things look unprofessional and causes unnecessary stress. I’d like to take initiative and solve this problem, no matter how much effort it takes.

To persuade someone to make our school their choice of school, I will tell them that everyone in our school can be involved in something they love or can learn to love it. There is so much potential for something greater, you just must find out what you want to see here, the mark you want to leave.

I feel like my confidence is my strongest trait. It allows me to speak for myself or for others without second thoughts.

For getting collabaration from my team, I’d encourage a transparent environment. I will also motivate my team when they contribute something, or they have an idea they want to voice. The only thing that stops contribution is the fear of being wrong, so if I can alleviate that fear by listening and understanding their perspective, our team can be a lot stronger.

I look up to my dad the most, because he has an amazing work ethic and he’s an amazing person to be around. He’s funny and knows when to joke around or be serious. He is a great motivator and I’m incredibly proud to have a dad like him.

I’m daydreaming about having a loving family of my own and an amazing wife, as silly as that sounds. It’s either that, or I’m daydreaming about getting every achievement in the games I play. Two different sides of the coin.

My favourite dish? Every pasta on this planet is my absolute favourite! If I had to pick one, I’d pick spaghetti bolognaise.

If I had to be a kitchen article, it would be “How not to burn down the kitchen for dummies” because I have no clue how to cook…

The career I want to pursue, is anything in IT, because I want to be a multipurpose tool, built for any job you throw at me. If I had to settle for one, I’d be a software developer. As for universities, I haven’t found anything yet.”
