On Saturday, 15 September, the Glenwood 1st XI played their opening fixture of the 2018/2019 season against Kearsney College at home. It was a special day for Sanele Mnqayi and Steven Naidoo who received their official 1st Team caps.
With 3 T20 warm-up games against Cornwall Hill (PTA), Clifton and Northwood the Glenwood side shifted their mind-set to the50 over format. Kearsney won the toss and captain R. Koenig chose to bat first. There was excitement early on when opening bowler Lifa Ntanzi got a wicket on the first ball of the innings with Jordan Hendrikse taking a beautiful catch at 3rd slip.
Glenwood took advantage of the early breakthrough and were awarded for their disciplined bowling. Jordan Hendrikse took 3 wickets in quick succession, putting Kearsney in all sorts of trouble at 25/4 after 10 overs. Kearsney struggled to find their way back but some resistance from C. Carmichael 27 (54) and J. Talbot 11 (43) as a pair put on 22 for the 6th wicket Thabiso Shangase came on and cleaned up the lower order with figures of 4/21 in 10 overs with 4 maidens, restricting Kearsney to 94 all out.
Glenwood openers Francis Moran and debutant Yastri Naidoo walked out in pursuit of the 95 runs required for victory. After a good start, Kearsney seamer C. Heunis got the wicket of Moran, flashing wide outside the off stump and kicking the ball to T. Muirhead at 3rd slip. Yastri Naidoo 17 (30) was the next batsman out shortly after, with J. Talbot taking the catch at short cover.
Thamsanqa Kumalo chipped in with a gutsy 21 (30) before he was bowled by M. Brokenshaw trying to work the ball down. At the crease was Hayden Rossouw 12 (25) and Steven Naidoo 23 (12)* who decided to take the bowling on and finish the game in style with a boundary over extra cover in the 20th over.
KEARSNEY: 94 all out (37 overs). Hendrikse 10-1-28-4; Shangase 10-4-21-4
GLENWOOD: 95/4 (19.2 overs). Naidoo 23 (12); *Kumalo 21 (30)
