On Friday 22 November, the Glenwood High School Annual Sports and Cultural Awards’ Assembly took place on the stands.
The Special Guest at this event was Alex van Rooyen (2018).
“Good morning Dr. Barnes, staff and pupils of Glenwood.
I could give you a speech of all my accomplishments since I was sitting in the front row but I rather tell you about how Glenwood helped get to where I am now.
Glenwood is a school that offers so many opportunities for a Grade 8 learner. If I am not mistaken there are 42 sport and cultural activities offered. Finding just two to do is probably the easiest thing to do. However, I chose 8 sports to do during my high school career. Every single one was competitive and all helped each other improve as your skills and mind are improving.
I really enjoyed my sports in school and they all opened doors for me. All the skills you learn in sport allows you to achieve after school from being punctual for training’s to never missing a session. It places good values into your life and they help you in your work and studies after school. Getting into the program in school and following it has helped me with my work life as the programs after school aren’t much different from our school systems. You always busy and learning.
In this school you have so many good role models and people who have experienced the outside world and have been at the top level of whatever they choose to do. My role model at school, took my cricket bat out of my hands and said to me that polo is your sport. He taught me that the amount of effort you put into something is the exact same you will receive back, from early morning training’s to late night sessions, whatever you put in is what you get back.
The only advice I can give you. Focus in class as if you don’t get the marks you want to study what you want you get stuck after school in a degree or certificate you do not enjoy. It makes everything hard. Give your all at practice and learn from everyone. Knowledge comes from everyone, don’t allow people to ruin your learning experience.
I can only thank the school, water polo and the coaches I have had over years for my success i am achieving at the moment.”
