Gauteng Provincial Cross-Country. 🏃 Curro Midrand Sagewood to Host Gauteng Provincial Cross-Country Championship.
Over 2,800 athletes to compete for national team selection.
Curro Midrand Sagewood, in partnership with Gauteng Schools Athletics (GSA), is proud to host the Gauteng Provincial Cross-Country Championships on Saturday, 30 August 2025. The event will see more than 2,800 athletes. The athletes from 15 education districts across the province are vying for selection to Team Gauteng, ahead of the SASA National Cross-Country Championships taking place on 4 October 2025 in White River, Mpumalanga.
A total of 120 athletes, spanning various age categories, will be chosen to represent Gauteng at the national level—making this one of the most significant school sporting events on the provincial calendar.
A Purpose-Built Cross-Country Experience
Athletes will race on Curro Midrand Sagewood’s specially designed cross-country trail. It has been meticulously redeveloped to meet official standards while preserving its natural charm. Nestled in Midrand’s gently rolling terrain, the course features natural contours, gentle rises, short dips, and technical bends—challenging runners to balance pace and agility.
“The Curro Midrand Sagewood trail is a well-balanced blend of challenge, flow, and accessibility, tailored to test athletes across all age groups and levels of experience,” says Johann du Toit, Operational Head at Curro Midrand Sagewood.
The trail combines compacted soil, grassy stretches, and subtle trail features. It offers ample space for strategic racing and safe group movement—while staying true to the off-road essence of cross-country running.
Competition Categories
The championship will feature athletes from the Under-9 to the Under-19 categories. It includes primary school, high school, and LSEN (Learners with Special Educational Needs) participants. Race distances range from 2 km for the youngest runners to 8 km for senior boys, with 21 races scheduled throughout the day.
- Route walk: 07:30–09:00
- First race: 09:30 – Under-10 boys (2 km)
- Final race: 15:10 – Under-19 boys (8 km)
The Heart of School Sport Development
“Cross-country running holds a special place in South African school sport, attracting athletes who excel through determination and resilience,” du Toit adds. “It cultivates endurance, discipline, and competitive spirit—qualities that define the athletes who take part. The sport continues to grow because it rewards effort and character as much as talent.”
