Deputy Head Prefect – Edgemead High School

Deputy Head Prefect. LIke the past few years, schoolsthatrock chat with the Head Leaders of High Schools in South Africa. The next leader this year we chat with is Simphiwe Xhonxa, Deputy Head Prefect of Edgemead High School in Cape Town.

“The thing I look forward to most during my leadership year, is learning more about myself. I think it’s obvious that I will be facing challenges and experiencing new things. So by the end of this year I look forward to seeing how much I have grown, not just as leader but also as an individual.

My goal for myself as well as for Edgemead High School, is to help the school grow as much as possible. I hope to be part of that growth and leave some sort of legacy when it is time for me to leave.

The one quality that stands out most of our school, is the diverse sports and culture the school has to offer. A student has a lot of options when it comes to extra murals and they are able to choose something that most suits their personality.

There is not much adjustments or changes I would like to see happen at our school, but I would really love to see the smaller and newer clubs and society to grow and flourish this year.

What our school offers

The first thing someone would think about when deciding which school to attend, is probably the extra murals the school has to offer. As much as we have variety of options, I think it’s important to think about academics as well. Edgemead High School happens to have some of the finest teachers. Our teachers genuinely want what is best for us and put in so much effort when it comes to the learners’ education.

I’d like to think that my strongest leadership trait is that I’m someone you can come to for help or if you need to just vent. I am all about communication and I need a plan when I’m about to do something. Some people may say that I am a ‘straight talker’.

For me to get commitment from the other prefects, I think it is important for me to communicate with them my plans as well as hearing what they have to say, so everyone will be satisfied when it comes to us doing our duties.

My parents are the people I look up to most. Even during tough times, they pulled through for my siblings and me. They try their very best in any commitment they put to themselves. My parents are people you can rely on and trust that they will have your back. They have taught me so much and have ensured that I live my life with values. My parents are my number one cheerleader, and I wouldn’t like to have it any other way.

Daydreaming

The one thing I daydream about the most is probably how great my December holiday is going to be. I know it has just been a few weeks since schools have re-opened but believe it or not, I’m tired.

At this stage I do not necessarily have a favourite dish but anything my parents cook is really comforting after a long day. I also don’t mind an occasional trip to a nice restaurant where I will probably order the typical burger and chips.

If I were a kitchen article, I would probably be a spork. It is not only just underestimated but also very versatile.

I don’t really know what career I want to pursue, but I do know that I want to study International Relations. I’m not picky about where I want to study but it would be a dream if I could study at WITS.”
