The inaugural Curro Halala Cup, South Africa’s newest and most ambitious school football tournament, concluded in spectacular fashion this weekend at HeronBridge College, with Meridian Northern Academy claiming the championship title after a thrilling final against Norkem Park High School.

Launched with the vision of uniting 64 top school teams from across the country, the Curro Halala Cup showcased the very best of South African youth football. Over four days, nearly 300 players competed for national glory and a R100,000 grand prize, delivering unforgettable moments of skill, sportsmanship, and heart.

“This tournament is about creating opportunities for learners to shine—not just on the field, but in life,” said Cobus Loubser, CEO of Curro Holdings. “These young athletes represent the future of South Africa: resilient, ambitious, hardworking and hopeful.”

⚽ A Final to Remember

The championship match saw Limpopo’s Meridian Northern Academy and Gauteng’s Norkem Park High School battle to a 1-1 draw, forcing a dramatic penalty shootout. With the crowd on edge, Meridian Northern Academy emerged victorious with an 8-7 win, securing their place in history as the first-ever Halala Cup champions.

Coach Hendrick Mukwevho praised his team’s determination: “I feel incredibly proud of my boys. From the first day of this tournament to this final moment, we’ve felt God’s hand guiding us.”

In addition to the team trophy, the Curro Halala Cup honoured standout individual performances:

  • Golden Boot Award: Omolemo Sekowe (Clapham High School)
  • Golden Glove Award: Manaka Kelelo (Meridian Northern Academy)
  • Best Player of the Tournament: Katlego Rhenoster (Meridian Northern Academy)
  • Halala Cup Spirit Award: Hillcrest High School (KwaZulu-Natal)

“I’m just super grateful,” said Rhenoster. “Representing my school and province has been amazing. I’ve learned so much from every match.”

🌍 A Vision for the Future

The Curro Halala Cup has set a new benchmark for school sports in South Africa, blending competition with character-building and national unity. “Football, and life, isn’t about one or two stars,” said Loubser. “You cannot score a goal in life without someone passing the ball to you.”

Following the overwhelming success of this inaugural event, Curro Holdings plans to make the Halala Cup a permanent fixture on the school sports calendar—continuing to inspire, uplift, and empower the next generation of South African heroes.
