Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) – Camps Bay High School

Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA). Two of Camps Bay High School’s talented Matric Art students, Kika Griesel and Casper Faithfull, were selected to exhibit their artworks at the prestigious Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA). The “See/n Matric Exhibition 2024” challenges young artists to explore perception as well as their sense of self as they transition into adulthood.

Kika Griesel’s artwork, titled “Lullaby,” intricately weaves together found bed sheets, archival photos, thread, glue and ink. Reflecting on themes of self-acceptance and transformation, Kika describes their piece as a contemplative exploration of memory and nostalgia. “Lullaby” serves as both a celebration and a eulogy, encapsulating the journey of identity and healing.

According to Kika, “The process of creating ‘Lullaby’ was deeply meditative. It allowed me to reconcile with my young self and embrace vulnerability without fear.”

Casper Faithfull’s piece, “Know No Trash,” incorporates soldered sea glass, 10 cent coins as well as copper tape. Inspired by a lifelong fascination with collecting and preserving discarded objects, Casper’s artwork also challenges perceptions of value and beauty. “Know No Trash” invites viewers to reconsider their definitions of worth in a world where uniqueness and imperfection also shine through.

Casper explains, “Through my artwork, I celebrate the beauty in what society often discards. It urges us to see the value in ourselves and others.”

Both Kika and Casper participated in the 2024 Matric Workshop at Zeitz MOCAA. The workshop is a transformative experience that culminated in their inclusion in the exhibition. The workshop, hosted by the Centre For Art Education, fostered rich discussions on contemporary art and artistic expression.

Ms. Lauren Terry, Head of Visual Arts at Camps Bay High School, emphasises the importance of such opportunities for young artists: “Participating in exhibitions like ‘See/n’ empowers students to find their creative voices. It also explore profound themes that resonate with both personal and societal narratives.”

The exhibition is now open to the public at Zeitz MOCAA. It offers a unique insight into the perspectives and talents of South Africa’s emerging artists.

“We are grateful to Zeitz MOCAA for providing this incredible platform for our students to showcase their talents,” added Ms. Terry.
