A monumental figure in Graaff-Reinet’s pre-school education sector has hung up her hat this week, closing the chapter on an almost three-decade-long career at Union Pre-School, built on a foundation of passion and faith.
Mrs. Sue Oliver joined the staff at the pre-school in 1991 and became its principal in 1994. In all the years since then, she has devoted her life to creating a special teaching and learning environment at the school, with the sole desire of improving the lives of those who attend.
“Throughout my time at this special little school, I have wanted to make sure that our children got the very best education possible,” she says.
But on Thursday, 13 June, the school bell tolled for the last time on an illustrious career. The popular teacher said she would miss her job “immensely” and it was “very special” to have been at the school for such a long time. When asked what she would miss most about the school, she was quick to answer, “the children, of course”. “Teaching in the early learning area, when they come to us they’re so keen and willing to learn; they’re just like little sponges”, she said. “They give you so much too.”
As a parent of the school remarked this week, Mrs. Olivier was an irreplaceable member of staff. “She is held in the highest regard by all teachers, parents and learners for her dedication, enthusiasm and determination to make a difference,” she said. “Her happy disposition, together with her passion and empathy towards students, has seen her become a highly valued and respected member of our school community who will be sorely missed.”
Mrs. Olivier was farewelled from the school at a special tea held on Thursday morning. The party, attended by parents, members of staff and friends of the school, concluded a career in which Mrs. Olivier helped hundreds of children learn how to write their names, tie their shoes or tell the difference between a circle and a square.
Memories came flooding back during the party as Mrs. Sue Olivier reflected on her years at the school’s helm. “Twenty-seven years is a long time in anyone’s language,” the Union Pre-School principal says. “I’m terribly sad to be leaving, but excited for the next chapter in my life.” After 27 years of laughter, tears and tantrums, Mrs. Olivier leaves behind a legacy of generations of children who came to see learning as play.
“I’ve loved every minute of time at Union Pre-School and all the children I’ve been lucky enough to teach,” she concluded.
