Action-packed Sports Week – St Charles College Weekly round-up

Action-packed Sports Week. It was another action-packed week for the boys in Blue and Gold. They continued their impressive run in the Midlands Tennis League. They also hosted football fixtures at home, competed in 7’s rugby with their B teams at Wembley, and welcomed participants to a vibrant Night Relay on campus.

⚽ First Team Football Report

St Charles College hosted Clifton on Saturday under warm and dry conditions. Both sides looked to assert themselves early, with the hosts dominating possession but struggling to convert in the final third. The teams went into halftime locked at 0–0.

In the second half, St Charles College continued to control the tempo and began to show greater precision in their build-up play, consistently testing Clifton’s defence. As the match edged toward a draw, defender Tuahir Tuahir made a decisive play—winning the ball at the halfway line, beating a defender, and linking up with Mlambo, who laid it off to Alckmin Simone. Simone calmly slotted the ball into the bottom left corner, sealing a well-deserved victory.

👏 Team of the Week Nominee: U15E Football.The U15E side delivered a thrilling performance against Clifton in a match full of end-to-end action. The game ended in a 3–3 draw, played in excellent spirit and providing great entertainment for spectators. Provided by Head of Football, Mr Gary Ritchie.

🏏 First XI Cricket Report

Fasken Time Cricket Festival – Johannesburg

The First XI travelled to Johannesburg for the prestigious Fasken Cricket Festival—a pre-season tour aimed at refining skills, gaining valuable match experience, and building momentum for the season ahead. The team played two two-day matches in ideal conditions against elite opposition.

Match 1: King Edward VII School (KES)

St Charles College opened their campaign against KES, one of South Africa’s premier cricketing schools. The match was fiercely contested over two days.

  • Batting Highlights: Connor Simpson impressed with a dynamic 51 off 54 balls, injecting energy into the innings. Despite KES’s disciplined bowling, St Charles showed grit and determination.
  • Bowling Brilliance: Keegan Vermaak led the attack with four vital wickets, forcing an early declaration from KES and keeping the game finely balanced.
  • Second Innings Surge: Caleb Sharp played a fluent knock of 84, supported by Ryan Clarke’s composed innings, ensuring a strong finish and valuable time at the crease.

Match 2: St John’s College (Mitchell Field)

Set against the scenic backdrop of Mitchell Field, the second match was another stern test.

  • Batting Excellence: Caleb Sharp continued his fine form with another elegant 84. Ryan Clarke anchored the innings with patience, while AJ Bosman and Rowen Rajah’s 70-run partnership laid a solid foundation.
  • Bowling Impact: Rowen Rajah’s fiery opening spell set the tone, with the bowling unit maintaining pressure and securing key breakthroughs.
  • Tour Highlight: A standout 190-run partnership between Christiaan Prinsloo (120*) and Thando Zama (89) showcased remarkable talent and maturity, marking a memorable moment in the tour.

🌟 Reflections from the Festival

The Fasken Festival delivered exactly what the First XI needed—competitive match play, exposure to high-level cricket, and opportunities for individual and team growth.
