Cultural Assembly – Camps Bay High School

Cultural Assembly. Camps Bay High School had the privilege of hosting the renowned theatre-maker, comedian and storyteller Sophie Joans at last week’s Cultural Assembly. Joans, an award-winning artist known for her captivating performances and insightful storytelling, shared her journey and experiences in the world of theatre, leaving a lasting impact on students and staff alike.

Joans has garnered acclaim for her various plays, including “ÃŽle,” which won the Gold Standard Bank Ovation Award, and “The Flower Hunters,” recipient of the Blue Standard Bank Ovation Award. Her latest work, “Dog Rose,” directed by former Standard Bank Artist of the Year Jemma Kahn, stars Joans alongside the award-winning actress Anthea Thompson. This play, which delves into the complexities of a mother-daughter relationship, also raises awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder, a condition often misdiagnosed in women and girls. Joans’ powerful performance not only entertains but also educates, shedding light on the nuances of social interactions and understanding.

During her talk at Camps Bay High School, Joans provided candid insights into her life in theatre, offering inspiration and guidance to students considering a career in the arts.

Saskia Welz, Camps Bay High School’s Head of Culture, remarked, “We are incredibly fortunate to have had Sophie Joans speak at our Cultural Assembly. Her passion for theatre and dedication to raising awareness about important social issues through her work is truly inspiring. She has undoubtedly sparked a newfound interest and excitement for the arts among our students.”

Sophie Joans’ “Dog Rose” is currently showing at the Baxter Studio until June 1. This compelling play is a must-see for those interested in thought-provoking theatre.
