Insect orals – Stulting Primary School

Insect Orals – Stulting Primary School, Humansdorp amazing Grade 3’s did their insect orals the 3rd of May. Wow is an understatement. They were brilliant and beyond. They learnt so many new facts about Insects.

A Few Fun Facts about Insects:
  • Adult lacewings have ears at the base of their wings. They can hear bats’ echolocation signals and then close their wings to appear smaller and avoid being eaten.
  • Just like most bugs that have bright colours the Picasso bug’s colours serve as a warning, “Bother me at your own risk!” When threatened the Picasso bug can let off a vile smelling substance. The bug itself is also poisonous to eat. The Picasso bug is the most beautiful little bug in the world, measuring no bigger than your little finger nail. It looks as if it has been individually hand painted by Mr Picasso himself.
  • Did you know butterflies taste with their feet?
  • Did you know, when ladybugs feel threatened, they bleed from their knees?
  • The stag beetle is the largest species of insect to be found in the UK.
  • Caterpillars have 12 eyes!
  • One dung beetle can drag 1,141 times its own weight. That’s like a human pulling six double-decker buses!
  • A single honeybee colony can produce around 100kg of honey each year. That’s 220 jars!
  • An ant-eating assassin bug piles its victims onto its body to scare predators.
  • Did you know bees are so noisy because they beat their wings eleven thousand four hundred times in one minute.
  • Large groups of fireflies sometimes flash in unison.
  • Some ants can be green in colour.
  • A panda ant looks like a spider.
  • Bulldog ants can leap seven times the length of their bodies!
  • Mosquitos are attracted to smelly feet!
  • Some male stoneflies do push-ups to attract a mate.
  • Grasshoppers have special organs in their hind legs that store energy for jumping.
  • A hornet’s favourite food is a…bee!
  • The red postman butterfly develops its own poison by eating toxic plants!
  • A sea skater’s leg hair traps air, enabling it to float on water.
  • Grasshoppers existed before dinosaurs!
  • Ladybirds sometimes play dead to avoid predators.
  • A dung beetle may be small but can roll a log sized dung ball.
  • Orchid praying mantis females live longer than males.
  • Stink bugs don’t bite.
  • A male wasp is called a drone.
  • A ladybird might eat more than 5,000 insects in its lifetime!
  • Did you know that if you put 100 black ants and 100 red ants in a jar, nothing will happen? But if you shake the jar hard, the ants start killing each other. The red ants consider the black ants their enemies and the black ants consider the red ants their enemies. The true enemy is the one shaking the jar.
