Rugby Captain – Meet Ethan Wimble from Curro Hillcrest

Rugby Captain. In our popular series about sports captains, Schools That Rock today talks to Ethan Wimble. Ethan is the Rugby Captain of Curro Hillcrest High School in Durban, 1st Rugby team. He scores the fourth try in our series this year on Rugby Captains from high schools in South Africa and Namibia.

Ethan, at what age did you start playing rugby?

  • I started playing rugby at the age of ten.

Why do you like rugby? What made you decide to play rugby?

  • I enjoy the team aspect of playing rugby as well as playing with my friends. Furthermore I do enjoy the combination of tactics and physicality.

How did you feel when you played your first game?

  • I remember feeling excited, but I was also nervous.
What do you remember about your first game of rugby?
  • The great feelings of running out onto the field.

As Rugby Captain, what advice would you give to beginners?

  • You never know until you try, and the more you hold back the more chance you have of getting injured.

When was the first time you were elected captain? (Not only current).

  • The first time I was privileged to be elected Rugby Captain, was at the age of ten years.

How did you feel when you first jogged onto the field as Rugby Captain?

  • I was motivated and very excited.

How do you keep your team motivated during a game – even when things aren’t going well?

  • I always try to keep everyone calm, encourage, talk and play well.

What inspires you every time you play on the rugby field for a match?

  • The feeling of driving home after a game, knowing I had nothing left to give and next weekend is another game.

In your career up to now – which game has been the most fun for you? Please elaborate on why this was the most fun match.

  • TMC 2023, when our team clicked really well.

Which game do you want to forget soon? Your worst game? Why?

  • The most recent game we loss.

When you have a tough game behind you, who do you seek help/advice from?

  • My dad and my brother always give me the best advice.

Who is your greatest rugby hero? Why?

  • Pat Lambie – Sharks Golden Boy.
What personal rugby goal/goals would you like to achieve this year?
  • I want to play the best rugby I can and then also enjoy every game.

Do you intend to continue playing rugby after school? At what level?

  • Still undecided, but I might decide to play club rugby.

How do you handle your responsibilities at rugby alongside social and academic responsibilities?

  • I try and manage my time and energy to the best of my abilities allowing time for everything.

What has been your biggest single highlight of your rugby career so far?

  • My first team debut, the try I scored off my brothers’ crosskick as well as being chosen as Rugby Captain in grade 11.

Do you participate in other sports before and after the rugby season? If so, what?

  • Yes. I also play Soccer, Cricket and Hockey.

Which professional rugby player would you like to have coffee with?

  • I would like to have coffee with Daniel Carter, New Zealand retired rugby union player.
