PRG Sports weekend – Jam-Packed and very successful

PRG Sports weekend. What a sports weekend it was for Paul Roos Gymnasium, Stellenbosch! The past weekend PRG had a jam-packed sports weekend with lots of activities: Swimming, Water Polo, Cricket, Tennis, Squash and Golf

Swimming

On Friday, 11 February, PRG had a legendary day. Twenty-five swimmers took part in two galas. PRG swimmers broke Paarl Boys’ High’s 8-year winning streak at the Frank Myburgh Twilight Gala and won the Boy/Girl gala with 4 points over Rondebosch Boys’ High. It was a truly historic day for the PRG swimming team.

Water Polo

It was a busy weekend for Paul Roos water polo with the u/19A team away at the Vides Water Polo Tournament hosted by Selborne College. The u/14A team was in Cape Town at the Dave Pitcairn Cup hosted by Reddam Tokai and the u/19C team travelled to Knysna to participate in the Chukka Festival hosted by Oakhill. The u/19A team finished 4th out of 20 teams losing to host school Selborne in the semi-finals. PRG players Cameron Meill and Ethan Mentjes where selected for the tournament team. The u/14A team made the school proud with a finish in 2nd – overall the highest placement PRG has achieved at this tournament to date. The u/19C team enjoyed a weekend away in Knysna further developing their skills with some good matches against other schools’ 19A and B teams.

Cricket

PRG’s u/14, u/15 and u/19 A-teams competed against Paarl Gymnasium over the weekend. Paul Roos performed well, with the u/19A team winning by 89 runs, the u/15A team winning by 2 wickets, the u/14 team winning by 32 runs. The u/14B team won Paarl Gymnasium by 6 wickets, whilst the u/14C won by 5 wickets. The u/19 D and E teams did well over the weekend as well. The u/19D team won Paarl Gym by 6 wickets and the u/19E team won by 12 runs.

Tennis

The Paul Roos u/15 tennis team held onto their undefeated status when they won for the fourth year in a row at the Boland Agricultural High School’s annual tennis tournament. The team played and won against Paarl Gymnasium, Oakdale High, Durbanville High, Nico Malan High School, Midstream and finally, Paarl Boys’ High.  The team members are Willem de Waal, Pieter Kotze, Xander Pienaar, Herman Roux, Charl Henning, Sebastian Oosthuizen and Henro Kruger.

Squash

The PRG u/19A squash team played with great results at the St Andrew’s Festival in Bloemfontein.  Paul Roos had two losses against Grey High (1-5 matches, 10-17 in games), and Menlopark (3-3 matches, 9-11 in games). PRG won 6-0 against St Dominic’s College (18-1 in games), and 6-0 against St John’s College B (18-0 in games). Paul Roos also walked away with a win 5-1 against St Andrew’s College from Grahamstown (15-4 in games).

Golf

Four PRG A-team golf players competed in the Selborne College 150 Jubilee Golf Festival over the weekend. After a tough day one the team landed on a third place standing against Stirling and Selborne. The team fared exceptionally well on day two and improved their standing to a final 2nd place on Sunday afternoon. The team consisted of PRG’s talented players Gerard Hartman, Andries van der Vyver, George Botha and Nicolas van der Vyver.
