Garden of hope – Camps Bay High’s garden produces first harvest

Garden of hope. At the start of winter, Camps Bay High School planted the first phase of their Garden of Hope. It is a food garden for the future with roots in the past.  Last week, Cara Kahn, Head of the Camps Bay High School Alumni Association, together with members of the Camps Bay High School Environmental Club, harvested the first batch of vegetables from phase 1 of the Garden of Hope.

Said Kahn, “Ultimately, the produce from our Garden will be used by Camps Bay High School families who are experiencing food security issues. For our first harvest, we decided to celebrate with a harvest table of salads. It was for the Camps Bay High School staff.  We also ensured that all those learners who assisted with our first harvest also received a salad for lunch.”

First harvest of vegetables

The first harvest produced a bounty of vegetables. The harvest includes lettuce, spinach, courgettes, beetroot and a selection of herbs. Phase 1 of the Garden has been entirely funded through generous contributions. Past pupils and current parents made contributions. There are still another 3 phases left to complete this project. A further R150 000 is needed.  Donations start at as little as R100 and an easy-to-use fundraising campaign has been set up on Quicket.

Concluded Kahn, “If every past pupil and current family contributed just R100 each, we will be able to reach our funding goal by the end of the year.  All donations, no matter how big or small will be recognised within the garden. There are also opportunities within the Garden to remember members of the Camps Bay Alumni “Gone to soon”.
