Schools That Rock reports on growing ‘grass heads’ at St Charles Junior Primary

During the second term St Charles College Grade 2 boys grew their own ‘grass heads’. This happened along with working on their theme of ‘plants growing’. Afterwards they subsequently gave them a haircut!

A FOUNDATION FOR LEARNING

“The child only deeply understands that which he has created.” Jean Piaget

“We also believe children learn best in context and through active discovery. We provide the opportunity for your son to do this by providing a safe, caring, family-orientated environment. This enables him and his peers to grow into self-confident, accomplished young men. The Junior Primary School undoubtedly has highly motivated, qualified teachers. Through their experience and knowledge they understand the unique learning requirements of young boys.”

LEARNING TO THINK FOR YOURSELF

An independent education is more than a good idea. From the start boys are taught to respectfully asking questions, making choices, and evaluating consequences. Along with skills like perseverance and intuition they’r encouraged and developed through tactile learning. This is no learning factory. By equipping the boys to read and establishing solid numeracy, we expect our boys to be the problem solvers and articulate negotiators of the future. This is done through through the Singapore mathematics approach.

THE WONDER YEARS

The Junior Primary years are colourful, active years of learning by doing a number of things. In particular they sing in Chapel, do painting in art and play the violin in music. Along with moving from play to sport, going on excursions or jumping into the 1m deep pool when it’s hot – the boys live life to the full. Every learning experience fuels the imagination of the boys as they learn to operate in a more formal environment.

We offer learning and development support through private specialists offering remedial lessons, speech therapy and occupational therapy. If required, boys attend these lessons on campus during the school day.

INTRODUCTION TO SPORT

Sport is a wonderful part of belonging to this College. Undoubtedly it is important to keep an educational perspective as boys are prepared to enjoy being part of teams. Furthermore they are learning to trust and rely on team mates. The outcome is achieving collective goals. Along herewith, we also begin with a multi-skill programme of sports activities. In addition to this fundamental movement skills and also games for children.

Furthermore a progressive pathway into team games allows boys to master skills and to clearly understand space. A lot of emotion goes into sport. Clearly we know what parents would really like. That is for their son to grow in confidence and skill level to contribute to the team effort. What they really need is unconditional support and encouragement. It is remarkable to watch how much the boys progress at this age. A multisport programme means that every boy plays every sport. Research indicates this is the best for boys.

AFTER CARE

St Charles College offers excellent value for busy working families. Supervised aftercare is provided Monday to Friday from 2pm (directly after sport) until 5pm.

No charge for these services.
