St Andrew’s School for Girls: Celebrating our Class of 2020

Celebrating our Class of 2020: My name is Khanya Sangqu. I am in Athlone Grade 12, and I started at St Andrews in grade 8. My fondest memory was probably when I was in grade 9, at the Interhouse gala. There was someone who couldn’t swim that day, and I was like, “I don’t mind doing it”. As I got into the water and started swimming to help the other child, I heard the whole school cheering me on – every single house, even the teachers were cheering, and I got a shoutout from Mrs Jeffrey. It had to be one of the proudest moments of my life because it showed me that even as a plus-size person, you can do anything – even if it is your weakest quality. The greatest skill that I have learned at St Andrew’s is that you shouldn’t be afraid to challenge people’s viewpoints. Advice I would give the younger girls would be to know that there are always teachers in your corner rooting for you, and willing to listen to you and build a trusted environment for you. It’s okay to cry and feel like giving up; but, once you have had your cry, get up and look at yourself and say: “I am a queen of my own queendom, I am strong and able!” When I matriculate, I plan on studying Dramatic art and Business studies; then would like to travel around Africa and learn about the true legacy of Africa.
