Glenwood Old Boy Mqondisi ‘MQ’ Ngubane spoke to the boys during assembly last week. MQ is an award winning television commercials director, documentary director and film director.
To date, his signature ‘PERFORMANCE AND LOOK AND FEEL’ touch can be seen in television commercials, films and music videos. Over the last couple of years, Mq has been the preferred high end television commercial director for local and international commercials such as Daily Sun, Newstart, Lovelife, First National Bank, Department Of Justice, Pick N Pay, Mascom (international), PICK N PAY’S Finish, Didata, SABC, Old Mutual, SABC, Freshpak Rooibos to name a few.
Mq is also passionate about narrative driven music videos and one of his most talked about music videos was a curtain raiser project for the prestigious French Cannes Film & Music Festival. Mq’s music video line-up include SAMA nominated music videos for South African pop sensation, Josie Field as well as Urban Reign (Channel O 2009 Hip-Hop Video winner) and of course Zahara and Wouter Kellerman. His television series achievements include directing an amazing 36-part television series titled In Your Defence SABC 2, along with the success of Psalted, a 13 part series also on SABC 2. Mq is also the creative brainchild behind the amazing film work seen on SABC 1’s very own military show titled IN YOUR DEFENCE. Mq was also called in to conceptualize a look and feel as well as direct Khanyi Mbau’s presenting debut on ETV titled KATCH IT WITH KHANYI. And who can forget his directing skills in 2013’s JAM SANDWICH SERIES (nominated for 2 SAFTA AWARDS) Mq also recently completed an action packed FEATURE DOCUMENTARY titled THE PEOPLE’S GENERAL, based on the life of a highly respected uMkhonto Wesizwe veteran. He also completed a controversial documentary on the life of BRENDA FASSIE. And let’s not forget another controversial project– an 8 part Television series based on Nelson Mandela, which was also re-edited as a highly stylized 48-MINUTE DOCUMENTARY. To date, Mq is working on a documentary based on the life of Jordan Ngubane – his controversial grandfather and one of the founding members of the ANC YOUTH LEAGUE.
