On Thursday 16 November 2017 the annual Boarding Establishment Christmas dinner for Glenwood High School, was held at Gibson House. In additional to the normal Christmas celebration, it is also a farewell to the Matrics of 2017 and the announcement and appointment of the B.E. Prefects for 2018.
Several sporting, academic and service awards are also made at the dinner: The special guest for the evening, Proteas Cricketer and Old Boy, Andile Phehlukwayo handed over the awards.
BEST SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT: This award is given for sporting excellence in the senior age groups. This was awarded to Juan Johan van der Mescht (SA Schools Rugby, KZN Athletics).
JUNIOR SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR: This was awarded to Joe Jonas (KZN Academy Rugby, 1st XI Cricket).
SENIOR SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR: This award is made for overall contribution to the House and the School. This was awarded to Slade du Randt (SA U18 Water Polo, 1st XV Rugby, Swimming A Team).
DUX OF GIBSON HOUSE: This is awarded to the top academic achiever in Grade12 in Gibson House. Sheldon Viviers (10th in the Grade, A aggregate, 6 distinctions).
SERVICE TO GIBSON HOUSE: This award is given to a pupil who has rendered outstanding service to Gibson House. This year’s winner is Josef Hartman.
SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD: This trophy is awarded to a senior pupil who must have displayed the characteristics that are associated with good sportsmanship; loyalty, commitment, fairness and perseverance even when the cause seems lost. Thihs year’s winner is Herendran Reddy.
HOUSEMAN OF THE YEAR: This is the Gibson House equivalent of the “Good Fellowship Prize” awarded on Speech Night. It is given to a pupil who has made a positive contribution to the spirit and ethos of the House. He need not necessarily be a good sportsman, but he must be a good fellow. He must be a good role model to all through his exemplary conduct and behaviour. He must inspire trust and honesty in his peers. Candidates are proposed by the matrics themselves and the winner is chosen by the votes of the boys. This year’s winner is James Livingstone.
Finally, the Head Prefect of Gibson House for 2017 is Renako Brynard who attended Elardus Park Primary in Pretoria before enrolling at Glenwood in 2014. The Deputy Head Prefects for 2018 are George Lozolo and Lunga Ncube. The Gibson Prefects for 2018 is: N. Archibald, W. Coetzee, B. Goulder, T. Gwatidzo, J. Hendrikse, R. Jonker, R. Kitching, T. Mdletshe, D. Needham, S. Ndlovu, D. Pretorius, JC.Swarts, J. Thyssen, D. Winkler and the acting prefects are: R. Atwill, J. Constant and M. Busane.
