Meaningful life after school – Michaelhouse true all-rounder

More than just one-dimensional. In his Rector’s newsletter today, it was affirmed that “At Michaelhouse, we believe in the value of the all-rounder. We want our boys to be more than just one-dimensional. A truly educated person has many different strengths. Our goal is to develop the ‘whole man’.Someone who is prepared not just for a match, but for a meaningful life after school.”

Oliver Thompson (B Block, McCormick) embodies this vision.

Fresh from participating in a 2nd-team hockey festival in Pretoria, Oliver ranked among the top 80 debaters out of more than 350 competitors. Immediately afterward, he traveled to Bristol, United Kingdom, to represent South Africa at the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championship 2026. There, he had earned his place as one of the country’s top 13 speakers at last year’s National Championship.

Debaters worldwide

This prestigious competition, featuring the finest speakers and debaters worldwide from Grades 8–11, tested Oliver across four demanding rounds. It is Persuasive Speaking, Impromptu Speaking, Interpretive Reading, and Debating. Out of 164 contestants, Oliver advanced all the way to the finals in debating – a remarkable achievement.

Adding to his accolades, Oliver was recently selected for the South African Senior Debating Team. He then proudly donned his green blazer.

His teacher, Mrs Sally Cahill, reflected: “This is a remarkable, but not surprising achievement when one considers this impressive young man. We are extremely proud of Oliver and all that he continues to achieve in debating. He is on top of maintaining his ‘top ten’ place in B Block academics each term (third). He also takes part in the choir and other cultural pursuits, as well as excelling on the sports field.”

Oliver Thompson is indeed a true Michaelhouse all-rounder. He excels in academics, culture, and sport, while inspiring his peers with his dedication and versatility.
