School Boy Rugby. Kearsney 1st XV beat Glenwood 1st XV 18–10 in miserable conditions.
Glenwood travelled to Kearsney on Saturday for the hosts’ first home fixture of the season. Played in miserable conditions, with mist and rain sweeping across the field, the match demanded grit and determination from both sides.
Kearsney struck first when Olly Ludwig powered over from a pick-and-go close to the line. Glenwood responded in the 19th minute with a penalty goal following a high-ball infringement, narrowing the score to 5–3.
A moment of brilliance followed from Kearsney’s Daniel Miskey, who chipped cleverly from a scrum deep in their own half. Lwazi Mbebe chased and grubbered ahead, linking with Thomas Aylward and Ludwig before James Whatmore finished off the move to extend the lead. Kearsney went into halftime 12–3 ahead.
The visitors hit back early in the second half with a converted try from a pick-and-go, closing the gap to 12–10 and setting up a tense final quarter.
In the 51st minute, young fly-half Miskey showed composure, dropping into the pocket to slot a crucial drop goal after sustained forward pressure. He later added a penalty in the 65th minute, sealing an 18–10 victory for the “One-Stripe” in their first home outing of the season.
It was a bruising contest, played in exceptionally trying conditions, and both teams deserve recognition for their commitment and resilience.
