A young athlete from Meridian Pinehurst Primary School has etched his name into South African athletics history.
Grade 5 learner Dylan Calvert, just 11 years old and hailing from Kraaifontein, delivered a record-breaking performance at the ASA Sub-Youth National Athletics Championships. Competing in the under-11 80 m sprint, Dylan clocked an astonishing 9.84 seconds. He shattered a national record that had stood unchallenged for 18 years. His victory not only secured the gold medal but also officially crowned him the fastest under-11 athlete in South Africa over this distance.
Dylan’s rise has been anything but sudden. Over the past two seasons, he has consistently impressed on the track. In 2024, he dominated the athletics circuit by winning both the 80 m and 100 m finals, cementing his reputation as a sprinting prodigy. His coaches describe him as dedicated, humble, and fiercely competitive—qualities that continue to set him apart from his peers.
Reflecting on his achievement, Dylan expressed pride in his record-breaking run and excitement for the future. His sights are now set on further improving his times as he prepares for upcoming provincial and national competitions.
