International Maths Competition (VIMC) – Courtney House School

International Maths Competition (VIMC). Courtney House’s Kylie Leung Adds Up to Excellence.

At just 11 years old, Courtney House International School learner Kylie Leung is proving that brilliance has no age limit. The Year 7 prodigy has been selected to represent South Africa at the prestigious Vietnam International Mathematics Competition (VIMC). The competition takes place in Danang City, Vietnam this August. This is an honour earned by only the top young mathematical minds from around the globe.

Kylie’s path to international recognition has been paved with outstanding achievements. Kylie scored an impressive 90% in Round 1 of the South African Mathematics Challenge (SAMC). She also qualified in Round 2 of the International Mathematics Assessment for Schools (IMAS). She then emerged as one of just eight learners nationwide to be chosen for the VIMC team. This is the result of a rigorous two-month selection process.

Her academic journey began when she enrolled at Courtney House International School at the age of two. Since then, she’s flourished in an environment that champions both academic excellence and holistic development, laying the foundation for her extraordinary success.

Intense schedule

Balancing brilliance with discipline, Kylie manages an intense schedule. She trains in gymnastics for three to four hours a day, five days a week, while dedicating a similar amount of time to mathematics preparation. Yet she still finds time for swimming, public speaking, and modelling. — all while exuding the focus and drive of someone far beyond her years.

In 2024, Kylie placed in the top 1% nationally in the South African National Mathematics Olympiad. She earned Gold Status and finishing second overall in the Grade 6 category. She also achieved a perfect score in the mathematics component of the International Cambridge Primary Checkpoints. Her talents extend far beyond numbers. She placed first overall in the Gauteng North Gymnastics Association Level 5 Competition (Year 11 category). Kylie also served as an overseas ambassador for South Africa at the Japan Kids Fashion Week.

“I love the competitiveness, meeting new people, and it’s fun,” Kylie says of her passion for mathematics competitions — a sentiment that reflects both her academic prowess and infectious enthusiasm.

Shoe Drive

Kylie also exemplifies the values cultivated by Courtney House. Last June, she and two friends led a School Shoe Drive to provide new shoes to learners at Mookgophong Primary School in Limpopo. Her passion project, “Amazing Medical Heroes – Inspiring the Next Generation,” features interviews with doctors and healthcare workers, inspiring others while nurturing her own dream of one day becoming a doctor.

Her advice to fellow learners? “Keep going, believe in yourself, and one day, you will achieve your dreams.”

Executive Head of Courtney House, Dimitra Bailanis, beams with pride: “Kylie is prepared to represent both her school and country with immense pride. Her achievements remind us of the remarkable potential young minds have when given the right opportunities to excel.”

Kylie Leung isn’t just solving mathematical problems — she’s showing the world how passion, perseverance, and compassion form the perfect equation for success.
