Winter Sports Festival - Grantleigh High School

Winter Sports Festival – Zululand’s biggest winter sport festival, on May the tenth drew thousands to Grantleigh High School.

Over 4,800 spectators, 16 top schools, and hundreds of young athletes create magic at the 18th Annual Peter Terry-Lloyd Winter Sports Festival Richards Bay. Grantleigh Schools once again played proud host to Zululand’s most anticipated junior sporting event. The Peter Terry-Lloyd Winter Sports Festival welcomed almost 5,000 visitors to its lush campus for a day of youth talent, sportsmanship,as well as community spirit.

Now in its 18th year, the festival brought together 16 of Zululand’s top primary schools. U9 to U13 teams competed across a range of winter sporting codes. The event is named in honour of Mr Peter Terry-Lloyd, Grantleigh’s founding principal. It continues to serve as a prestigious platform for young athletes to shine.

Rising Sport Stars

From early morning kick-offs to final whistles in the afternoon, the fields and courts also came alive. With the passion and energy of rising sports stars, they were cheered on by enthusiastic parents, coaches, alumni, and supporters. Rugby tackles, netball passes, and hockey goals were met with roars from the crowd. The echoing of the deep-rooted school pride were shared across the region.
“Their festival has grown into something incredibly special,” said Grantleigh Executive Head, Mr Dirk van Zyl. “It’s more than a sports event – it’s a celebration of Zululand’s youth. The spirit of healthy competition as well as the enduring values of teamwork and discipline.”

Beyond the action on the field, the event offered a festive family atmosphere with food stalls and a buzzing community. The success of the day reflects not only the high standard of sport in the region. It is also the tight-knit relationships between schools, families, and the broader Zululand community.
