The Beasts of Old – Grantleigh College

The Beasts of Old. Christopher Tanser, a Grantleigh College alumnus who matriculated in 2019, has recently released his new book, The Beasts of Old. This follows his release of Surviving the Vanishing Sea, which is book one of his “Ancient Planet” trilogy. Tanser, who studied Zoology at the University of Lincoln, is not only an author but also a qualified field guide. His unique experiences in the wild have significantly influenced his writing, bringing prehistoric creatures to life with scientific accuracy and creative storytelling.

During a recent presentation at Grantleigh College titled “Finding Your Niche,” Tanser captivated students with his journey and insights. He shared how his encounters with modern-day animals like hippos, rhinos, lions, and elephants have helped him depict the behaviours and environments of prehistoric creatures in vivid detail. His passion for nature and zoology shines through in his work, making his stories both educational and thrilling.

Tanser’s writing journey began at a young age, inspired by The Chronicles of Narnia. He started creating his own mini books, each featuring time-traveling adventures. Balancing his demanding job as a field guide with his writing, Tanser dedicates his off-weeks to diving into his novels, ensuring that his real-life experiences enrich his fictional worlds.

The Beasts of Old showcases Tanser’s dedication to scientific accuracy, with detailed depictions of creatures like sabretooth tigers, based on fossil evidence. Yet, he also embraces the creative freedom to imagine the unknown aspects of these ancient animals, making his stories both realistic and imaginative.

Christopher Tanser’s journey from bush guide to author is a testament to his passion for both writing and the natural world, inspiring students and readers alike to find their own niche and pursue their dreams.
