2025 Growthpoint SA Nationals. 🏆 Saint Andrew’s School, Bloemfontein, Celebrates National Squash Champion Dean Katzin.

Saint Andrew’s School, Bloemfontein, is beaming with pride as one of its own, Dean Katzin, emerged victorious at the prestigious 2025 Growthpoint SA Nationals U17 Squash Championships, held at the iconic V&A Waterfront’s all-glass court at Makers Landing from 14–16 August.

🌍 Road to Glory

Dean’s journey to the national title began in March, when he clinched the top spot at the Free State regional hub, one of eight held across South Africa. Each hub winner earned a coveted place at the Nationals, where the country’s best young squash talent battled it out in a high-stakes showcase of skill and resilience.

The final match was a thrilling five-game battle against Eden’s Christian Swanepoel, a former U15 national champion. Dean showed remarkable composure and grit, especially after dropping the third game in a nail-biting tiebreaker. He regrouped and surged ahead in the fourth to seal the championship.

More Than Just a Winner

Dean’s talent was matched by his sportsmanship. Commentators and the event MC praised his positive attitude, ever-present smile, and calm demeanor on court. His coach, Calvin Deutschmann, a stalwart of South African junior squash, was also lauded for his enduring contribution to the sport and the generations of elite players he has mentored.

🇿🇦 National Recognition

Adding to his accolades, Dean was officially ranked South Africa’s No. 1 U16 squash player for 2025 on 15 August. This recognition cements his place among the country’s rising stars and signals a bright future ahead.
