Holly Smith. Camps Bay High School’s very own K2 Canoe Marathon World Champion, Holly Smith, had an unexpected and truly unusual encounter while paddling off Miller’s Point yesterday. A seal, in an unusual turn of events, pulled her from her ski, resulting in a significant leg injury.
Thankfully, Holly wasn’t alone! She was paddling with her fellow Orka Squad members, including her brother Ryley, Heath Clarke, and Josh Smith. These lifesavers sprang into action, using their lifesaving skills to bring her back to shore safely. Holly was swiftly transported to the hospital, where she received the necessary treatment and stitches.
Recent reports have highlighted an increase in aggressive seal behaviour, possibly due to neurological damage caused by domoic acid poisoning from harmful algae blooms. While the exact cause remains uncertain, it’s crucial to stay informed about our coastal environment.
Holly faces a temporary setback, with a 12-day hiatus from the water, impacting her training for the upcoming ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships in Australia, slated for late November/early December. We’re sending Holly all our love and support for a speedy recovery!
A massive shout out to Ryley, Heath, Josh, and the entire Orka Squad for their quick thinking in ensuring Holly’s safety.
