Head girl 2025 – Curro Somerset West

Head girl 2025. This year, Schools That Rock is once again talking to the Head leaders of High Schools in South Africa. Today we talk to Dané van der Westhuizen, Head girl 2025 of Curro Somerset West.

“As Head girl 2025 of Curro Somerset West, I’m looking forward to develope a sense of unity and inclusion within our school. My goal is to establish a setting where each student feels valued, heard, and seen. Furthermore working together with my teachers and fellow students to bring innovative ideas into action that will benefit our school community.

My personal goals for this year is to grow as a compassionate and eCectively leader and to inspire confidence in others as well as encouraging them to follow their dreams. Also to balance academics, leadership responsibilities, personal well-being and my physical health. My goals for the school is to strengthen communication between students and teachers and to encourage learners to take part in clubs, sport and culture events, to help them explore their passions and develop skills for the future. Lastly to cultivate a supportive and family-like atmosphere where students feel empowered to lead and succeed.

Curro Somerset West stands out because of its warm, inclusive culture and commitment to academic excellence. The school emphasizes nurturing both personal and professional growth, providing opportunities for students to shine in academics, arts and sports. The supportive relationships between teachers, students, and parents are also remarkable.

Any adjustments/changes that I would like to see happen? I’d like to see more student-led projects, where learners can propose and implement their own ideas that align with their passions and the school’s values.

Choice of school

To persuade someone to make Curro Somerset West their choice of school, I would emphasize the nurturing environment, where every student is encouraged to reach their full potential. From excellent academic programs to diverse extracurriculars and a strong sense of community, our school provides a well-rounded experience that prepares students for life beyond school.

My strongest leadership trait is compassion. I deeply care about others and strive to ensure everyone feels valued and included. I believe this helps me connect with people, understand their needs, and motivate them eCectively.

Getting collaboration (commitment) from my team, I will ensure open communication as well as listening to everyone’s ideas and concerns. I’ll lead by example, showing dedication and enthusiasm for our goals.

The person I look up to the most is my ballet teacher because she embodies grace, discipline, and resilience. Her ability to inspire others through her passion and dedication motivates me to bring the same energy to my leadership.

I often daydream about creating meaningful change, whether it’s within my school, community, or future career. I imagine leading projects that leave a lasting positive impact.

My favourite dish? It is sushi – it’s both artistic and delicious!

If I had to be a kitchen article, I would be a whisk. A whisk brings diCerent ingredients together to create something amazing, just like I aim to bring people together to achieve common goals.

Career after school

To be completely honest, I have no idea what I would want to do with my life after school, I love teaching ballet and choreographing, as it allows me to inspire and guide younger dancers. This has sparked a passion for nurturing and mentoring others, which is something I hope to carry forward in my life. At the same time, I am also drawn to careers that involve accounting or law, where I can use my skills in problem-solving, logical thinking, and attention to detail.

Both fields align with my goal-oriented mindset and desire to make a meaningful contribution to society. While I am still exploring which path feels right for me, I aspire to study at a prestigious university, such as Stellenbosch University, the University of Cape Town, or another institutions that oCers excellent programs in my areas of interest. I am committed to making the most of the opportunities I have now to ensure I can pursue whichever career path I choose with confidence and passion.”
