Head Girl 2024. Like previous years, Schools That Rock interviewed Head Leaders of High Schools in South Africa. The next candidate interviewed is Lilitha Nodikana, Head Girl 2024 from Curro Somerset West.
Lilitha, tell us more about yourself and your leadership.
- My name is Lilitha Nodikana, I’m a grade 12 student at Curro Somerset West. I enjoy playing netball and doing drama at school. Outside of school I enjoy going to the gym, spending time with family and friends and making videos with my siblings. My leadership journey started in grade 7 when I became a monitor/ prefect and after that it just continued. I was part of the RCL grade 9 -11 and then joined the SRC in Grade 12 Now I am head girl at Curro Somerset West. Being a leader was always a quality that I had growing up with and I definitely got it from my father, so shout out to my father for that.
What are your personal goals for the next year?
- As Head Girl 2024, my personal goals for next year are to go to university and study something that I enjoy. Hopefully get into content creation and make videos. Also get my drivers license as soon as possible in the year and overall, just do well in whatever comes my way and what I do.
Tell us what are your goals for Curro Somerset West during your term of service?
- As Head Girl 2024, one of my biggest goals is to infuse the school with spirited energy, fostering a vibrant atmosphere. I think spirit is a very important part in a school especially for learners. A good environment with good GEES can also be an important factor to make school more enjoyable. Starting traditions is also something important and close to me that I would like to start. Introducing new traditions will be pivotal, creating lasting memories as well as a sense of continuity. By organising engaging events and promoting open communication, I aspire to strengthen the school’s sense of community. Through these efforts, my vision is to leave a legacy of unity, spirit, and inclusiveness that resonates long beyond my term.
What were the biggest challenges you experienced as a learner of your school?
- Honestly speaking, I haven’t had any major challenges and even when I had, they weren’t anything much but were always sorted out immediately.
What stands out most to you at Curro Somerset West?
- What stands out most at my school is the remarkable closeness within the student body. There’s a genuine sense of community where everyone knows each other. This creates a supportive and inclusive environment. Equally notable is the attentiveness of our teachers. They are always willing to go the extra mile to help students succeed. The strong teacher-student connection enhances the overall learning experience. This combination of a tight-knit community and dedicated educators fosters an environment where everyone feels valued, supported. Also inspired to excel academically and personally, making our school a truly special place.
Lilitha, who do you look up to for inspiration or mentorship?
- I find inspiration and mentorship from two key sources – my mom and teachers. My mom serves as a beacon of resilience, determination, and compassion. Her unwavering support and wisdom guide me through challenges. Her faith in God is also something she’s instilled in me, which also inspires me a lot. Among my teachers, there are those whose passion for their subjects and commitment to student growth resonate profoundly. Their dedication goes beyond textbooks, instilling a love for learning and fostering personal development. These mentors collectively shape my values, work ethic, and aspirations. Their influence encourages me to navigate life’s journey with courage and empathy. They always motivate me to do my best no matter what.
You’re a kitchen article? What are you and why?
- An air fryer because I am efficient, versatile, and get things done quickly, just like an air fryer crisps up food in no time and it’s convenient.
How would your friends describe you?
- I asked a few of my friends how they would describe me, and this was what they said: humble, caring, responsible, persistent, truthful, talented, interesting, funny, talkative, loving, intelligent person, prettiest most intelligent girl and I’m funny sometimes apparently.
What motivates you to achieve your goals?
- The driving force behind my goal pursuit is a combination of personal passion and a desire to contribute positively. I find motivation in the fulfilment of my aspirations, knowing that achieving these goals aligns with my values and brings personal satisfaction. Something else that also motivates me is making my mom and those close to me proud. Their support and belief in my abilities serve as a powerful force, instilling a sense of responsibility and determination. Knowing that my accomplishments can bring joy and pride to my loved ones creates a strong, personal drive to succeed.
Why would you advise learners to also become part of Curro Somerset West?
- I would advise learners to become part of our school for several compelling reasons. Firstly, the school boasts a team of caring and dedicated teachers who go beyond academics to nurture students’ personal growth. The diverse student body ensures exposure to various perspectives and cultures, fostering a rich learning experience. Additionally, our school environment priorities inclusivity, creating a supportive atmosphere for everyone- celebrating differences, which is one of the school values. The combination of caring teachers, diverse peers, and a positive school culture provides an ideal setting for holistic education, encouraging learners to thrive academically and personally. Joining our school means being part of a community that values each individual’s journey and success.
Who is your favourite teacher and why?
- Unfortunately, I don’t have one favourite teacher but a few, top 3 favourite teachers are Mrs Isaacs, Mrs Kruth-Stander and Ms fourie. Their passion for their subjects, ability to make learning enjoyable, and interesting personalities create a dynamic and engaging classroom environment. Beyond academics, their consistent support and approachable nature make them reliable mentors. The infusion of humour adds a delightful touch, making the learning experience not only educational but also enjoyable. Having teachers who are both dedicated and personable contributes significantly to a positive and enriching educational journey, fostering a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom. Making Afrikaans, Life Orientation and Accounting my favourite subjects to go to and look forward to.
Lilitha, what are your future goals?
- My future goals are to do something I enjoy, succeed in what I do and to follow God’s plan for me. I would also like to help others and to do something that benefits and brings joy to others. I would like to travel around the world more and see new places and meet new people. Ultimately, my overarching aim is continuous personal growth—intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually—ensuring a purposeful and meaningful life journey in accordance with my faith and values.
