Head Girl 2024. Like in previous years, Schools That Rock interviewed Head Leaders of High Schools in South Africa. Our next candidate is Lufuno Mabogo, Head Girl 2024 of Curro Midrand Sagewood High School.
Funi, tell us more about yourself and your leadership.
- My name is Funi, short for Lufuno. As the Head Girl 2024 of Curro Midrand Sagewood High School, I’ve always been deeply passionate about fostering a sense of community as well as empowerment among my peers. I also believe in leading by example and serving as a role model for others. My leadership style is built on communication, collaboration, and empathy. I also strive to listen to the concerns and ideas of my fellow students. I believe in working together to create positive change within our school environment.
What are your personal goals for this year?
- In this year, my personal goals revolve around personal growth and academic achievement. I aim to challenge myself academically by taking on new subjects and exploring areas of interest outside of the classroom. Additionally, I aspire to further develop my leadership skills through extracurricular activities and community involvement.
Funi, tell us more about your goals for Curro Sagewood during your term of service?
- During my term of service, my primary goal for our school is to enhance the sense of unity and inclusivity among students. I want to create a supportive environment where every individual feels valued and heard. Additionally, I hope to implement initiatives that promote mental health and well-being, ensuring that all students have access to the resources and support they need to thrive.
What were the biggest challenges you experienced as a learner of your school?
- As the Head Girl at Curro Sagewood, one of the biggest challenges I faced was finding a balance between academics, extracurricular activities, and personal responsibilities. It’s often easy to become overwhelmed with coursework and commitments, but through time management and prioritization, I’ve learned to navigate these challenges effectively.
What stands out most to you at Curro Sagewood ?
- What stands out most to me at Curro Sagewood is the position that the school gives its leaners as the body of the school. Our school encourages the sharing of ideas and opportunities amongst the learners and the school. It allows for every student’s voice and concerns to be heard and appreciated.
Who do you look up to for inspiration or mentorship?
- With a question like this, I can’t help but think of my Leadership mentor, Information Technology teacher, but most importantly my Friend, Mr Cameron Pillay. Mr Pillay demonstrates resilience, compassion, and integrity. Not only in his work, but also in the support and relationships he has built with his learners. The environment he has created for his learners in his classroom is very welcoming and comfortable. Unfortunately, he is leaving but I will always be grateful for his teachings.
Funi, you’re a kitchen article? What are you and why?
- If I were a kitchen article, I would be a mixing bowl. Like a mixing bowl, I strive to bring people together and blend different perspectives and ideas to create something greater than the sum of its parts. I believe in the power of collaboration and teamwork to achieve common goals.
How would your friends describe you?
- My friends would describe me as empathetic. I trait I for very long time deemed as a weakness but with the help of my friends have realised the importance of it. Kindness is a word often overlooked on in most cases. When we practice kindness, it doesn’t just help us, it also helps those around us as well. Kindness has ripple effect, spreading from individual to individual and quite effectively leads to a healthier and more united school environment.
What motivates you to achieve your goals?
- I’m motivated by a desire to make a positive impact and leave a legacy. Whether it’s through academic achievements, leadership initiatives, or personal growth, knowing that my efforts contribute to the betterment of my school and community is incredibly rewarding.
Why would you advise learners to also become part of Curro Sagewood ?
- I would advise learners to become part of Curro Sagewood because it offers a diverse range of opportunities for personal and academic growth. Whether it’s through clubs, sports teams, or community service projects, there’s something for everyone to get involved in and make a difference.
Who is your favourite teacher and why?
- My favourite teacher is Mr Motswalo who ironically does not teach me. What he has taught me is that the simpleness of making another feel noticed could impact their life vastly.
What are your future goals?
- My future goal is to be accepted to study abroad and pursue a career in gynaecology. It is a path that allows me to continue making a positive impact in my community. Working hard to make my late father and single mother proud is all that would fulfil my hearts deepest desires.
