Cultural Assemblies – Camps Bay High School

Cultural Assemblies. Over the past few weeks, Camps Bay High School’s Cultural Assemblies, organised by Ms. Saskia Welz, co-Head of Culture at Camps Bay High School, have featured a series of inspiring speakers.

Albie Sachs
For Mandela Day, the school hosted Albie Sachs, father of Oliver Sachs, a Matric student at Camps Bay High School, who also introduced his father on the day. Albie Sachs is a distinguished South African jurist, human rights activist and former judge of the Constitutional Court. His early involvement in the anti-apartheid struggle, his resilience through detention and a car bomb attack, and his pivotal role in drafting South Africa’s constitution are truly remarkable. His visit was a powerful reminder of courage and justice, making Mandela Day unforgettable for the Camps Bay High School community.

Romaney Pinnock

The school also welcomed Romaney Pinnock, a trailblazer in women’s football. As the founder of Badgers Football Club, a Non-Profit Organisation affiliated with the South African Football Association, Romaney has spent over six years developing the club and empowering young players, especially girls and women. Her visit highlighted her significant impact on the sport, increasing participation as well as challenging inequalities. The school was honoured to have her share her experiences with them.

Adam Welz
Adam Welz, an acclaimed environmental writer and photographer, also visited the school. With work featured in The New York Times, National Geographic, and Outside Magazine, and as the author of The End of Eden: Wild Nature in the Age of Climate Breakdown, Adam has made a significant impact in environmental storytelling. His visit shed light on critical issues like deforestation and conservation, inspiring the Camps Bay High School students to also take action to protect our planet.

Rebecca Davies
For last week’s assembly, Camps Bay High School hosted Rebecca Davies, who delivered an engaging presentation as the Parliamentary specialist at Daily Maverick. Known for her sharp wit and versatile writing, Rebecca shared her fresh perspective on political journalism, combining serious analysis with humour. Her talk provided valuable insights and an inspiring experience for our students, demonstrating her skill in shaping public debate while keeping her audience engaged.

Said Saskia Welz, co-Head of Culture at Camps Bay High School, “We are grateful to all our speakers for their contributions and for enriching our Cultural Assemblies with their expertise and experiences.”
