International Science Expo – Curro St Dominics Newcastle

International Science Expo. St Dominics Newcastle is proud to announce that Grade 11 learner, Husna Docrat, has been selected to represent South Africa at the upcoming International Science Expo in Bali, Indonesia.

Husna’s outstanding project, titles ‘Bioplastics: Plastic of the Future’ has garnered attention for its innovative approach to tackling environmental issues.

Seeking eco-friendly alternatives to traditional plastics, Husna embarked on a mission utilising everyday materials – potato and banana peels. Through meticulous experimentation, she successfully produced bioplastics that not only boasted superior strength and durability, but also environmental sustainability.

What truly sets Husna’s project apart, is its eco-friendly decomposition. After undergoing rigorous testing, her bioplastics decomposed within just six months in both aquatic and terrestrial environments. This breakthrough also showcases the material’s viability as a practical alternative to conventional plastics, without resorting to harmful chemical processes.

Husna’s dedication to environmental innovation serves as an inspiration to her peers and teachers alike. Her achievement underscores the importance of nurturing scientific curiosity and problem-solving skills among young minds.

Executive Head of St Dominics Newcastle, Mr Chad Moses, along with the entire St Dom’s community, extends a huge congratulations to Husna on this remarkable accomplishment. Her success serves as a beacon of hope for a greener, more sustainable future.
