Uber talented Motsamai Moreki is a Grade 5 learner from Curro Vanderbijlpark. He has putted his way into the spotlight yet again, thanks to his outstanding performance in two prestigious golfing tournaments in USA recently.
Motsamai’s journey to the United States of America began when he was nominated for the World Qualifier hosted by SA Kids Golf. His skills and dedication paid off. He earned himself a coveted spot representing South Africa in the 2023 Pepsi Little People’s Golf Tournament in Quincy, Illinois, USA, in June 2023.
The tournament, which celebrates its 50th anniversary, attracts young, gifted golfers between three years to 18, from all corners of the globe.
In Quincy, Motsamai’s hole-in-one moment included playing a fantastic 36 holes. He finished an impressive second in his age group (10-11 years). While the wind and greens presented some challenges, the competent young golfer showed resilience and determination. He missing the top spot by only two shots. Nonetheless, he demonstrated remarkable sportsmanship, acknowledging the efforts of his fellow competitors, and forging friendships with players from different countries and states.
Following his success in Quincy, Motsamai teed off in his second 36-hole tournament in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois, later in June 2023. This time, the golf gods smiled upon him as he emerged victorious. He claimed the first-place trophy in his age group (10-11 years). The elation of victory was bittersweet though, as he dedicated this win to his late Grandmother. She had passed away on the day of his arrival in the U.S.
Little People’s Golf Tournament
“It is a dream come true to represent my country in the 50th anniversary of the Little People’s Golf Tournament. Though the competition was tough, I wouldn’t have been able to achieve anything without the excellent support system including my coach Fanie Roos, my sports psychologist, Theo Bezuidenhout, and my physical trainer, Armand Jacobs. I thank each of them for their hard work and commitment to me and my game, as well SA Kids Golf for providing young golfers like me with opportunities to showcase our talent and grow in the sport we love,” comments Motsamai.
Sharon Gordon, Curro Vanderbijlpark’s Executive Head expressed her pride in Motsamai’s achievements, stating, “We are absolutely thrilled for Motsamai and his remarkable performance on the international golfing stage. His dedication and determination exemplify the values we instil in our learners. As he continues to strive for excellence, we are certain that he will continue to soar to new heights and cannot wait to hear about his next triumph.”
As the year progresses, Motsamai has his sights set on becoming the best player of the year. Leading the SA Kids order of merits, he aims to clinch the title, adding another feather to his cap. Eager to prove himself once again on an international stage, Motsamai will be heading abroad again in December 2023, this time to tee off in the Arab Emirates Championship in Dubai.
