Remembrance Day – St Charles College continued in this custom

Remembrance Day.

On Friday, 11 November people all around the world observe Remembrance Day. This is to honour the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians in times of war, particularly since WW1.

St Charles College too has continued in this custom, setting aside the business of the day to remember and honour the fallen. They especially gave thought to those St Charles College Old Boys who paid the ultimate sacrifice. The past is easily repeated. Remembrance Day is a day which keeps alive our hope that the noble sacrifices of the past were not in vain. It was for the betterment of humanity.

St Charle College were grateful to have members of the South African Legion and other representatives of military veterans participating in the ceremony. They laid a wreath in memory of fallen comrades.

The school’s Head Boy, Luke Hubble, addressed staff, students and guests underscoring the significance of the day. The Chamber Choir sang a rousing version of Benedictus composed by Karl Jenkins, arranged by Dorian Kelly; “Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis!” (Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest!)

Kanyinsola Bankole and Thingo Makhathini respectively played the two calls, the Last Post and the Reveille. During this interlude they paused to remember those who gave their lives in war. With gratitude they also layed a wreath for those St Charles College boys who offered their lives in these wars.

The releasing of doves, symbolizing the release of our loved ones and capped a meaningful Remembrance Day service for St Charles College. – Mr Ross Ducasse (Chaplain).
