Saints campus – Remembrance Day at St Charles College

Saints campus. On 11 November people all around the world observe Remembrance Day. Remembrance Day is a day to honour the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians in times of war. In solidarity, St Charles College has continued in this custom setting aside the business of the day to remember and honour the fallen.

We were grateful to have members of the South African Legion and other representatives of military veterans participating in the ceremony by laying a wreath in memory of fallen comrades. Our recently appointed Head Boy, Mark Nagel, addressed staff, students and guests regarding the significance of the day and the sacrifices of the brave men and women around the world who gave their lives in war.

The Music department, led by our Chamber Choir, sang a beautiful version of Mozart’s requiem called Lacrimosa;

Lacrimosa dies illa
Qua resurget ex favilla
Judicandus homo reus.
Huic ergo parce, Deus:
Pie Jesu Domine,
Dona eis requiem. Amen.
Full of tears will be that day
When from the ashes shall arise
The guilty man to be judged;
Therefore spare him, O God,
Merciful Lord Jesus,
Grant them eternal rest. Amen.

Nathan van Staden and Kanyinsola Bankole respectively played the two calls, the Last Post and the Reveille. During this interlude we paused to remember those who gave their lives in war, and with gratitude laid a wreath for those St Charles College boys who offered their lives in these wars. The releasing of doves, symbolizing the release of our loved ones, capped a meaningful Remembrance Day service for St Charles College.
