The grandfather of Camps Bay High School Grade 10 learner, Ben Stoltzman and Class of 2018 Alumna, Charlotte Stoltzman, was honoured in a special Remembrance Day ceremony held in Cape Town yesterday.
Walter Brewis who is 95 years old, served in the Pretoria Regiment in Italy during World War II. Mr Brewis was the only WWII veteran at yesterday’s special event.
Said his daughter and Ben and Charlotte’s mother, Colleen Stoltzman Brewis, “We are bursting with pride. He walked by himself to lay a wreath on behalf of the Pretoria Regiment, whom he served with in Italy. He got a special mention and a standing ovation.”
In South Africa, Remembrance Day is not a public holiday. Commemoration ceremonies are usually held on the nearest Sunday to the 11th of November, at which the “Last Post” is played by a bugler followed by the observation of a two-minute silence. Ceremonies to mark the event in South Africa are held in Cape Town and Pretoria.
