Glenwood High School – Fun Fact Friday

Although there were WWI and WWII memorial plaques on display in the School foyer, these had been unveiled in 1947 with no additional names having been added in the interim period. Furthermore, there was no memorial to those Old Boys who had died in service since 1945. It was felt that the School needed an outdoor memorial, one that was easily accessible and which the boys could walk past every day. It would also then be possible to hold annual services in the Hall linked to the memorial. The Bell Tower, built in 1988, was designed to look out over the fields, where the boys had once played. There are three red marble plaques on the structure – the WWI Roll, the WWII Roll and a Roll of Honour of all the fallen since 1945.
