Glenwood is proud to announce that the Director of Rugby, Mr Derek Heiberg will take over the position of 1st XV Rugby Coach for 2018.
Derek Heiberg is a qualified Biokineticist with vast exÂperience in rugby coaching and conditioning. He is an IRB Level 2 qualified Coach, has a national diploma in Strength and Conditioning, as well as completing a vast number of short courses.
Derek started at Glenwood in 2013 as the strength and conditioning consultant and Head of Physical Education. This year he was appointed the Director of Rugby and the assistant 1st XV Coach.
Derek was born and bred in Cape Town and went to Bergvliet High School where he played rugby.
2001 to 2002: he was a voluntary rugby coach at WynÂberg Boys High. He went on to become their skills and conditioning coach for the 1st XV, where he held the position for the following two years.
As part of his compulsory UWC Practicum, he worked as a conditioning assessor for The Western Province Rugby Academy. During this time, 2002 to 2004, he was also the conditioning and backline coach for the False Bay 1st XV Club Team. This team achieved third position in the Super League B.
The following two years he was a voluntary assistant trainer for The Hurricanes in New Zealand, assisting with general conditioning coaching.
2005 to 2006: he was the conditioning and backline coach for Hamilton’s Rugby Club 1st XV, who won the Super League B title resulting in a promotion to the first division.
2005 to 2008: he headed into the classroom as a Physical Education Teacher at Wynberg Boys’ Junior School. At the school he was Head of Rugby for the juÂnior school, coaching the U13 A team. He taught genÂeral physical education, educating learners and their parents on nutrition.
2007 to 2011: he was the conditioning and backline coach for the Villagers Rugby Club 1st Team.
2011 to 2012: he did rugby conditioning for the UCT Varsity Cup team.
2013: he was the assistant coach of the KZN Duikers, who were the Central Conference Winners that year.
2013 to 2014: he was the assistant coach for the Collegians Rugby club 1st XV. They reached the Murray Cup Finals and achieved second place in the Moor Cup League, they were the Moor Cup Winners in 2014.
Since 2014 he has been the Head Coach of the Sharks Club XV and Head Coach of College Rovers Rugby Club 1st XV since 2015. The Sharks Club Team reached the final of the SARU Amateur Provincial Championship for the first time in KZNRU history in 2014 and 2015 while Rovers have won the Murray Cup in 2015, the Moor Cup in 2016 and 2017 while they also made the Gold Cup final in 2017.
Derek has assisted a number of amateur players that have gone on to play representative rugby.
In his free time he loves spending time with his family, his twin boys, two pugs, a Great Dane and a cat. When time allows it, he plays golf. He is a huge Arsenal fan, thus he tries to watch as many of their games as he can.
He is very passionate about the game of rugby and ensuring that players develop and reach their full poÂtential on and off the field.
