Multi-functional Legacy Project. Durban Girls’ College Breaks Ground on R49-Million Legacy Project.
Durban Girls’ College has officially broken ground on its new indoor multi-functional centre. This marks the start of construction on the R49-million development first announced last year.
The first official site meeting took place on campus this week. Work commencing with the demolition of the existing staff accommodation. This will be the first visible step in bringing the new facility to life.
State-of-the-art 3,370 m²
The state-of-the-art 3,370 m², three-storey facility will include a sports centre, multi-purpose hall, and additional boarding and staff accommodation. It is significantly enhancing the College’s facilities as it prepares to celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2027.
Construction will inevitably bring periods of disruption and noise on campus. However, the College community is embracing this phase as an important step toward realising a vision that will strengthen Durban Girls’ College’s position as one of South Africa’s leading schools for girls.
Designed by Elphick Proome Architecture (EPA) – the award-winning firm behind the College’s Aquatic Centre and Miller Grove building – the new centre reflects a commitment to modern design, sustainability, and functional learning and sporting spaces while remaining true to the character and heritage of the campus.
Multiple indoor sports
The sports centre will feature a spacious hall capable of accommodating multiple indoor sports including tennis, badminton, netball, volleyball, soccer and hockey, with seating for spectators. A flexible multi-purpose hall will also provide a dynamic venue for examinations, exhibitions and school events.
“This is a milestone moment for Durban Girls’ College,” said Executive Head Heidi Rea. “This legacy project represents an investment not only in facilities, but in the future of our girls and the generations of students who will follow. As we move steadily toward celebrating 150 years of Durban Girls’ College in 2027, it is exciting to see this vision becoming a reality.”
Construction is expected to be completed in time for the school’s 150-year celebrations in 2027, creating a modern, versatile space that will serve both the College community and future generations of students.
