Cold Water Junior Classic. Camps Bay High’s Ben Esterhuyse Shines.
Grade 10 learner Ben Esterhuyse delivered a standout performance at last weekend’s O’Neill Cold Water Junior Classic in Cape Town. He dominated the field and walked away with multiple accolades and prizes.
Representing both the Rip Curl team and the National Junior Team, Ben clinched victory in the Under-18 division, securing a share of the R35 000 prize purse. His consistency and skill were further recognized with an additional R10 000 award from Lifestyle Surf Shop, honoring his exceptional performance throughout the event.
Adding to his achievements, Ben captured the prestigious Rip Curl team presented to the surfer with the highest combined heat scores across the competition. This accolade highlighted not only his technical ability but also his composure in the demanding cold-water conditions.
Ms. Busi Ngcwama, Head of Sport at Camps Bay High School, praised Ben’s maturity and dedication:
“At just 15, Ben is competing with discipline and confidence well beyond his years. What stands out is not only the results, but the way he approaches his surfing—with composure, quiet confidence, and relentless work behind the scenes. It’s incredibly rewarding to see that dedication pay off at the national level.”
Ben’s success at the O’Neill Cold Water Junior Classic underscores his rising status in South African surfing and sets the stage for even greater achievements in the years ahead.
