Milestone in Transport Safety. Grantleigh Schools has reached a remarkable milestone — 11 million kilometres travelled without any serious injuries across its school transport fleet. This achievement reflects decades of disciplined safety practices, rigorous training, and the exceptional commitment of its transport team.

Executive Head, Dirk van Zyl, emphasised that the milestone signifies far more than distance covered: “It reflects our commitment to learner safety and operational excellence. For our parents and community, it reinforces the trust they place in us daily. Knowing their children are transported safely and with genuine care brings immeasurable peace of mind.”

Transport: A Cornerstone of Growth

Since opening in 1997, transport has played a critical role in Grantleigh’s growth. Today, nearly 80% of learners — from as young as two years old to Matric — rely on the school’s transport service. Routes extend across a radius of approximately 80 kilometres, reaching St Lucia, Mtubatuba, Kwa-Msane, Arboretum, Meerensee, Empangeni, Mtunzini and beyond. Weekly services also support boarders travelling from northern areas such as Hluhluwe, and from 2026, routes will expand to Sodwana Bay, Mozambique, and Eswatini.

Safety Systems and Human Care

Grantleigh’s safety success is underpinned by a comprehensive system that includes:

  • Breathalyser-activated ignition
  • Live vehicle tracking
  • Dedicated bus monitors
  • Monthly fleet audits
  • Biometric registers
  • Strong communication channels with parents

Behind these systems is a team of drivers renowned for their reliability and genuine care for learners.

Fleet Excellence

Fleet Manager Gavin Keet credits consistency and teamwork for the fleet’s longevity. Daily visual checks, timely servicing, strict tyre management, and immediate attention to mechanical issues all contribute to the school’s outstanding safety record.

Over the years, the fleet has grown to 19 vehicles, including:

  • 10 Toyota Hino buses
  • 3 Yutongs
  • 3 Mercedes Sprinters
  • Several support vehicles

This term, the school introduced a new Preschool bus equipped with car seats and child-friendly features, while also replacing a 65-seater bus as part of its ongoing modernisation programme. Future developments include upgraded technology for enhanced tracking and communication, as well as potential route extensions to support rising enrolments.

Gratitude and Commitment

Van Zyl extended his gratitude to all Grantleigh staff who contribute to transport safety:

“Milestones like this are never accidental. They reflect shared values, teamwork and dedication. Thank you for upholding the standards that keep our learners safe.”

With its strong safety record and continual improvements, Grantleigh remains steadfast in its mission: to ensure every child’s journey is safe, reliable, and nurturing — from the very first kilometre to the 11-millionth and beyond.

To God Be the Glory.
